- — Re-read to the World Cup break. Since 18 August the field has closed: Dallas clinched the eighth seed on 26 August with a 96-78 win over Portland, which eliminated the Fire, and by the last pre-break games on 30 August all eight playoff teams had clinched and all seven non-playoff teams were out. Corrections: this page previously said Portland were not eliminated and that Toronto had not been eliminated either — both are now wrong, and both are fixed above. Every record, both charts and the bracket are re-read to 30 August. The seeding has moved as well: Las Vegas are third and Atlanta fourth with Indiana fifth on the same 26-14 record, so the bottom-bracket pairings are Las Vegas-New York and Atlanta-Indiana. The games-remaining section has been replaced: teams no longer have different numbers of games left, all fifteen have played 40 and have four to play.
- — Golden State have clinched a playoff berth, and the last place in the field is no longer the formality it looked on 17 August: Portland have won two in a row and now sit 4.5 games behind Dallas, from 5.5. Correction: this page previously called that gap six games, which was the difference in the win column rather than the league's games-behind figure. The order above them has moved too — Indiana are third and Las Vegas fourth, so the 4-5 pairing on the current table is Las Vegas against Atlanta, who won 97-82 in Las Vegas on 18 August. - The field is closed. All eight playoff teams have clinched and all seven others are eliminated; Dallas took the last berth on 25 August by beating Portland 96-78, which put Portland out in the same game.
- Only the seeding is left, and five games cover second through eighth. New York, Washington and Dallas are all 24-16 for the last three seeds; Atlanta and Indiana are both 26-14 for fourth and fifth.
- Ties are now what decide the order. Atlanta sit above Indiana on identical records because the season series was split 2-2, which sends the order to a further tiebreak this page does not attempt to call.
- On the table at the break the first round would be Minnesota-Dallas, Golden State-Washington, Las Vegas-New York and Atlanta-Indiana.
- Every team has played 40 of 44 games and has four left. The league is paused for the FIBA World Cup until 16 September, resumes on 17 September, ends the regular season on 24 September and starts the playoffs on 27 September.
All eight playoff places are taken. The order they go in is not.

Why is Atlanta above New York on the same number of wins?
Because seeding is by winning percentage, not by wins — and the two teams have not played the same number of games.
Atlanta are 22-13 and New York are 22-15. Identical win column; New York have two more losses and two more games played. On percentage it is .629 against .595, so Atlanta sit fifth.
The same thing separates third from fourth. Indiana and Las Vegas both have 24 wins; Las Vegas have played one game more, and are seeded below them.
Teams have played between 34 and 37 games. Reading this table by the win column alone will put you in the wrong order.
Who has clinched, and who is out?
Five teams have a settled status, and the league says which on its own table.

Golden State are the new name there. They did not carry the clinched marker on 17 August and do now, on the back of a six-game winning run.
Portland are not eliminated. They sit 4.5 games behind Dallas with nine to play — still a long way, but a game closer than at the weekend, and the league has not marked them out. This page will not call them out before the league does.
At the other end, Toronto have lost eleven in a row and are 0-10 in their last ten, and the league still has not eliminated them either.
What would the bracket be?
If the season ended on today’s table, the first round would look like this. The top eight are seeded one to eight regardless of conference and paired highest against lowest.

The bottom half has moved again. Las Vegas took third back from Indiana, and Atlanta climbed to fourth, so the two pairings this page listed in August have both changed. Indiana have gone from third to fifth in a fortnight without ever being more than a game and a half from either.
The 2-7, 3-6 and 1-8 lines are the least stable part of it, because New York, Washington and Dallas are all 24-16 and any reshuffle among the three redraws three of the four matchups at once.
The season does not end today, so treat the bracket as the table at the break applied to the published format, not a prediction. It has changed twice already.
How much is left to play?
Four games each, for all fifteen teams.
The uneven schedule that shaped this race in August has evened out. Every team in the league has played 40 of its 44 games, and every team has four left, all of them after the break: play resumes on 17 September and the regular season ends on 24 September.
That matters for how you read the table. Through August the standings had to be read on percentage, because teams had played anywhere from 34 to 37 games. From here the win column and the percentage say the same thing, and the only separators left are the results themselves and the tiebreak rules.
What does the FIBA break do to the run-in?
The break is already on. The last games were played on Sunday 30 August; the league is dark from 31 August to 16 September for the FIBA Women’s World Cup, which runs 4-13 September in Berlin. Play resumes on 17 September and the regular season ends on 24 September.
So what is left is eight days of basketball for every team — four games each — and then the playoffs three days later. Fifty-one players on WNBA rosters are at the World Cup, from every team except Chicago, which is why the league stopped rather than played through.
When do the playoffs start, and what is the format?
The postseason begins on Sunday 27 September, three days after the regular season ends.

Ties in the standings are broken first on head-to-head record, and then on winning percentage against teams that finish .500 or better — the league’s own published procedure. What to watch
- Watch the two ties, not the top. Minnesota at 31-9 lead by two with four to play. The real questions are fourth against fifth, where Atlanta and Indiana are level at 26-14, and the three-way 24-16 tie for sixth, seventh and eighth.
- Fourth place is worth having. The top four seeds host the deciding game of a best-of-three first round; fifth does not. That is what the Atlanta-Indiana tiebreak is actually deciding.
- Nobody is playing for a place any more. All eight are in and all seven others are out, so the last four games are seeding and nothing else — which changes how teams handle rest and rotations coming out of the break.
- The break is longer than the run-in that follows it. Seventeen days off, then eight days of basketball, then the playoffs. Form in late August is a weak guide to the last week of September.
- Check the standings again on 17 September. That is the first night of games since 30 August, and every figure on this page starts moving that evening.

How we verified this
Every record here was re-read on 2 September 2026, during the World Cup break, against three independent standings tables — ESPN, CBS Sports and Wikipedia — which agree on all fifteen win-loss lines. They do not all agree on the ordering of tied teams, which is noted where it matters. The WNBA’s own standings page did not respond on the day of this update — repeated requests timed out rather than returning a page — so the league table could not be read directly this time, and that is stated rather than papered over. The page cannot be read any other way: a plain request now returns HTTP 403 for a real path and for an invented one alike, so that channel cannot tell a live page from a missing one and was not used.
ESPN was deliberately not used, because no check on it can work either. Its standings page, its home page and an invented path all return HTTP 202. When the same signal comes back for a real and a fabricated URL, the test is void, so the source was set aside rather than trusted.
“Clinched” and “eliminated” are markers, not our arithmetic. Every team in the league now carries one or the other: the eight in the table above are in, the seven below are out, and no row is unmarked. Portland were the last to fall, on 26 August, in the game that clinched Dallas the eighth seed. This page previously argued that Portland should not be called out before the league called it — that was right at the time and is now moot.
The table is complete through Sunday 30 August, and no further, because there is no further. That was the last slate before the FIBA World Cup break; the league does not play again until 17 September, so this table cannot move until then. Atlanta beating Minnesota that afternoon was the Lynx’s ninth loss and the last result of the pre-break stretch.
Games remaining are derived and the derivation is shown. The 2026 season is 44 games per team, so remaining is 44 minus games played. Every team has now played 40, so the figure is four across the board — the uneven schedule that made this worth printing in August has closed up, and the page says so rather than quietly dropping it.
The bracket is the current table applied to the published format, not a forecast. The WNBA seeds its top eight by record regardless of conference and pairs them one against eight, two against seven and so on. Reading today’s table into that structure is arithmetic. It is labelled as what the bracket would be if the season ended now, because it will not — and it has already changed once since this page was first published, which is the point.
No betting odds or prediction-market prices appear anywhere on this page. That is a site-wide rule rather than a judgement about this season. Several of the pages that rank highly for this topic are sportsbook pages; none was used, and no implied probability is reported.
We do not name the eventual seeds or a champion. Five games cover seven teams, a two-week international break sits in the middle of the run-in, and anyone claiming to know the order is guessing.
The tiebreak rule is quoted from the league’s own procedure, which resolves ties first on head-to-head record and then on winning percentage against teams finishing .500 or better.
