Key takeaways
  • Sam Pang won the 2026 Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television, at the 66th TV WEEK Logie Awards held at The Star in Sydney on Sunday 16 August.
  • It is his first win and his first nomination. He hosted the ceremony three years running — 2023, 2024 and 2025 — and was never nominated in any of them.
  • He had already stood down as host before the nominations came out. In May he said he was ‘just not going to do it this year’ and that ’three was a nice number’.
  • Robert Irwin hosted this year and was also nominated. He lost the Gold Logie to the man he had replaced behind the microphone.
  • Three inductions went into the Hall of Fame: Deborah Mailman, reported as the first Indigenous actor inducted, along with Andrew Denton and the long-running serial A Country Practice.

The detail that makes it more than a result: he hosted the Logies three years running and was never once nominated. This year he stood down from hosting — and won on his first nomination.

Who won the Gold Logie in 2026?

Sam Pang. It is his first Gold Logie, and his first time on the ballot for it.

His acceptance was in keeping with the three years he spent running the room: “I’ve got lots of people to thank tonight and I’ll probably forget some names.”

Why is that a surprise?

Because he was in the building for three years without being nominated once.

Pang hosted the ceremony in 2023, 2024 and 2025. In May 2026 he confirmed he would not be back, telling the Sydney Morning Herald: “I’ve had three great years, and it was wonderful, but I’m just not going to do it this year.” On the decision itself: “It was very amicable… I just thought three was a nice number.”

At the time, coverage noted he had never received a Gold Logie nomination despite that prominence, and wondered aloud whether stepping back might finally produce one. It produced one and the award with it.

Who else was nominated?

Seven names, including the man presenting the show.

  • Ally Langdon
  • Julia Morris
  • Lisa Millar
  • Poh Ling Yeow
  • Robert Irwin
  • Sam Pang — winner
  • Todd Woodbridge

Robert Irwin hosted this year’s ceremony and was nominated in the same category. He lost it to the person whose hosting job he had taken over — a neat piece of symmetry that the night arranged by itself.

Who went into the Hall of Fame?

Three inductions, per Variety Australia’s report of the ceremony:

  • Deborah Mailman, reported as the first Indigenous actor inducted
  • Andrew Denton
  • A Country Practice, the serial that ran for more than a decade from 1981

Who won the other major awards?

These are the major categories rather than the full list — the Logies award a good many more.

What the Gold Logie actually is

It is the popular vote, not a jury prize. The Gold Logie goes to the Most Popular Personality on Australian Television and is decided by public voting, which is why it does not always align with the craft categories decided the same night.

That distinction is the reason a result like this one is possible: three years of being the most visible person at the ceremony counted for nothing on the ballot, and the year he was not there, it did.

How we verified this

The result is reported from outlets we could open and control-test, not from a search summary. Variety Australia and TV Blackbox both return live pages for the articles cited here while invented paths on the same hosts return 404, so those checks discriminate. The New Daily and TV Tonight could not be verified the same way — The New Daily returns the same Cloudflare block for a real and an invented URL, and TV Tonight returns a live page for an invented path, which is a soft 404. Neither is cited as a source.

We nearly published a wrong framing and checked it in time. The obvious assumption about a popular host winning is a run of consecutive wins, and that is wrong. What was consecutive was his HOSTING — three years, 2023 to 2025. He had never been nominated for the Gold Logie before this year. The 2026 award is his first nomination and his first win.

The hosting quotes are his, given before the nominations existed. TV Blackbox reported in May 2026, citing the Sydney Morning Herald, that Pang confirmed he would not return: “I’ve had three great years, and it was wonderful, but I’m just not going to do it this year”, and “I just thought three was a nice number.” That article also noted he had never received a Gold Logie nomination and speculated that stepping back might change it, which is what then happened.

We do not describe the margin. One headline calls the win a landslide. Logies voting figures are not published, so there is no margin for us to report and we have not repeated the characterisation as fact.

The Hall of Fame detail is attributed rather than asserted. Deborah Mailman being the first Indigenous actor inducted comes from Variety Australia’s report of the ceremony. It is a claim about a first, and firsts are the kind of claim that gets repeated without checking, so it is carried with its source attached.

The winners list is one outlet’s, and is labelled as the major categories rather than the complete list. The Logies award many more categories than appear here.

The hero image is a stage curtain, chosen deliberately. An earlier candidate was a gold statuette that closely resembled an Academy Award — the wrong award entirely, and a protected design. Nothing on this page depicts a Logie.
