Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure is a live-action prequel series to Stranger Things, ordered by Netflix and announced on Friday, Nov. 6, 2026. Netflix says it is set in the 1950s and will premiere in 2028. It tells a new story with new characters, created by longtime Stranger Things writer Kate Trefry with Matt and Ross Duffer. No cast, episode count, premiere month or date has been announced.
Everything below reflects what Netflix and the trade press had published as of Saturday, Nov. 7, 2026, at 8 a.m. ET (13:00 UTC). Later on there are spoilers for the Stranger Things finale and The First Shadow, and they sit behind a clearly marked warning.
What is Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure?
It is the first live-action spinoff series of Stranger Things: a prequel that Netflix ordered and announced on Stranger Things Day, Nov. 6, 2026.
Stranger Things Day falls on Nov. 6 because that is the date in the show’s story, in 1983, when Will Byers disappeared. Netflix marks the day each year as Stranger Things Day. This year the announcement went up on Netflix’s Tudum site and in the trade press at 9 a.m. ET, together with a short teaser.
Other Worlds is the official title. The Duffers first talked publicly about a live-action spinoff in 2022, but until Friday it had no name.
Outlets count the franchise differently. Variety calls Other Worlds the fourth project in the Stranger Things universe, after the main show, the animated Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85 and the stage play The First Shadow. Deadline counts it as the second TV spinoff and the third spinoff overall, including the play.
When does Other Worlds come out?
Netflix says Other Worlds premieres in 2028, and it has given only the year.
As of Nov. 7, Netflix had not announced a month, a date or how many episodes there will be. What’s on Netflix reports that Netflix has put up a title page where viewers can set a reminder.
Netflix has not confirmed a production schedule either. What’s on Netflix says filming will reportedly start in 2027. Deadline reports that by September 2026, word was that the project was nearing a greenlight for production to begin in 2027. Treat both as reports, not as Netflix’s own timetable.
Who is making Other Worlds?
Kate Trefry is the showrunner, writer and an executive producer, and she created the series with Matt and Ross Duffer. Joe Wright directs the first three episodes.
These are the names in Netflix’s announcement:
- Kate Trefry: co-creator, showrunner, writer and executive producer. She has written for Stranger Things since Season 2, and she wrote the script for the stage play The First Shadow.
- Matt and Ross Duffer: co-creators and executive producers through their company, Upside Down Pictures.
- Joe Wright: directs the first three episodes and is an executive producer. His films include Pride & Prejudice, Atonement and Darkest Hour.
- Shawn Levy and 21 Laps: executive producers. Levy directed episodes of the main series, but he is not directing here.
- Paul Dichter, Shelley Meals, Andrea Sperling and Pavlina Hatoupis: executive producers.
The business side has changed since the main show. Variety reports that the Duffers’ Netflix overall deal expired in April 2026 and that they now have an overall deal at Paramount. Other Worlds is carved out of that Paramount deal, so the brothers can produce it for Netflix. Trefry, not the Duffers, runs the show day to day. Deadline reports that Levy has also left Netflix, for an overall deal at Disney’s 20th Television.
Who is in the cast of Other Worlds?
No one has been cast yet. The Duffers’ statement says, “Now, on to casting.”
Netflix announced no actors on Nov. 6, and none had been announced by Nov. 7. Some entertainment sites are already running fan wish lists and cast predictions. Those are guesses, so we leave them out here.
When and where is Other Worlds set?
Netflix says it is set in the 1950s. The teaser card reads April 19, 1955, Marion, Nevada.
Netflix’s announcement says only “the 1950s”. It places the series decades before the main show’s kids uncovered the conspiracy in Hawkins, Indiana, and before the events of The First Shadow, which takes place in 1959. The specific date and town come from the teaser, which opens on a card reading April 19, 1955, Marion, Nevada. That is where and when the teaser is set. Netflix has not said whether the whole series stays in 1955 or in Marion.
Keep two places apart:
- Nevada is where the teaser places the story.
- New Mexico is where Netflix says production will take place. It is a filming location, not the setting. One trade report described the series as having a New Mexico setting, and that is wrong.
The Duffers had already hinted at the change of era. Deadline reported in November 2025 that Ross Duffer said their next project would not be set in the 1980s.
What does the Other Worlds teaser show?
The teaser shows a bike left near a restricted area at night, town lights in the distance, and a disturbance in the sky that looks like a wormhole opening.
The song is “Sh-Boom” by The Chords, a 1954 doo-wop hit, and longtime viewers will recognize it from the main series. We explain why in the spoiler section below.
The Duffers ended their statement by telling fans to watch the skies. Some coverage has read that as a hint at UFOs or aliens. Netflix has not described the plot, and nothing official says what the disturbance in the sky is.
The bike is a small joke for longtime viewers. Deadline reported that in late 2025 Matt Duffer said they were probably done with kids on bikes. The first image of the new show is a bike.
Is Other Worlds about Eleven and the Hawkins kids?
No. The creators describe a new setting with new heroes and villains, and What’s on Netflix reports the Duffers said it will not follow Eleven or the Hawkins crew.
The Duffers call it “Stranger Things, but also thrillingly fresh”, with new heroes and villains. Trefry calls it a wholly new story. Shawn Levy describes a new ensemble with all-new characters, themes and mythology. In Netflix’s own statement, Netflix’s head of scripted series for the US and Canada says it takes viewers to the 1950s with new heroes.
What’s on Netflix reports that at a podcast taping in May 2026, the Duffers said the series would not follow Eleven, Mike, Dustin or the rest of the Hawkins group, and that it is not an anthology. The 1950s setting is decades before the main series.
Some coverage has called this a Vecna origin story. Neither Netflix nor the creators have said that. The connection they have described is narrower, and we cover it in the spoiler section below.
Where does Other Worlds fit in the Stranger Things timeline?
Other Worlds is the earliest story in the franchise so far: set in the 1950s, before The First Shadow’s 1959.
The table lists each Stranger Things story in order of when it is set. “Set in” is the story’s in-world time, as Netflix describes it, and “Status” is where it stands as of Nov. 7, 2026.
| Story | Set in | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Other Worlds | 1950s | Due 2028 |
| The First Shadow | 1959 | On stage |
| Stranger Things | 1983 on | Ended 2025 |
| Tales From ‘85 | Winter 1985 | Streaming |
A few notes on the table:
- Other Worlds: Netflix says the 1950s and places it before The First Shadow. The teaser card’s date is April 19, 1955. Deadline and What’s on Netflix report that it takes place a few years before the Nevada experiment in The First Shadow. No source places it more precisely than that.
- The First Shadow: the stage prequel follows a teenage Henry Creel in Hawkins in 1959. Some of its events take place in Nevada.
- Stranger Things: the main series begins in November 1983. Its fifth and final season premiered in 2025, and the final episode was released on Dec. 31, 2025.
- Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85: the animated series follows the Hawkins kids through the winter of 1985, between Seasons 2 and 3 of the main show.
Can you still see The First Shadow before Other Worlds arrives?
Yes, for now. The play ends its run at the Phoenix Theatre in London’s West End on Dec. 27, 2026, and at the Marquis Theatre on Broadway on Jan. 3, 2027.
The producers announced those closing dates in June 2026, and Netflix repeated them in its Other Worlds announcement. Trefry wrote the play from a story by herself, the Duffers and Jack Thorne. It won Olivier Awards in London and Tony Awards on Broadway.
After January, there is no confirmed way to watch it. Deadline and What’s on Netflix report that Netflix filmed the play in February 2026, but Netflix has not announced whether or when the filmed version will be released. Deadline also cites a theatergoer at one of the tapings who said the filmed version moves the play’s Nevada scenes from Rachel to Marion, the town in the Other Worlds teaser. Netflix and the producers have not confirmed that account.
⚠️ Spoiler warning: the next section discusses Henry Creel’s backstory as shown in The First Shadow and in the final season of Stranger Things. Skip to “What else is in the Stranger Things universe right now?” if you have not seen them.
How is Other Worlds connected to Henry Creel?
Matt Duffer has said the series will explain the otherworldly rock that young Henry Creel finds in the Nevada caves, and the Duffers say it will delve into the larger history around Henry.
In The First Shadow, and later in a flashback in Season 5 of Stranger Things, a young Henry Creel finds a strange rock in a scientist’s briefcase in caves in Nevada. That discovery starts the chain of events that turns him into the villain of the main series. Deadline and What’s on Netflix report that Matt Duffer told Variety the spinoff would explain that rock. Variety reports that the Duffers, in an interview tied to the series finale, teased that the spinoff would focus on events before Henry was exposed to the otherworldly substance that gave him his powers. What’s on Netflix also reports that Ross Duffer called it a completely different story that still relates in some ways to the original series.
The teaser’s song points the same way. “Sh-Boom” plays in Season 5, Episode 4, when Max visits Henry Creel’s memory of Hawkins High.
Netflix has not said that Henry appears in Other Worlds, and neither Netflix nor the creators have called it a Vecna origin story. They describe a wholly new story with new characters.
What else is in the Stranger Things universe right now?
The main series’ five seasons, two seasons of the animated Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85, the stage play and two Netflix House attractions.
- Stranger Things, Seasons 1 to 5: all streaming on Netflix. Netflix says Seasons 1 to 4 have drawn more than 1.2 billion views.
- Stranger Things: Tales From ‘85: Season 1 (10 episodes) arrived on April 23, 2026, and Season 2 (8 episodes) on Sept. 17, 2026. Eric Robles is the showrunner. Netflix says both seasons are streaming. As of Nov. 6, Deadline reported that it was awaiting a renewal decision, and Netflix has announced nothing either way.
- Stranger Things: The First Shadow: on stage in London until Dec. 27, 2026, and on Broadway until Jan. 3, 2027.
- Live experiences: Netflix lists Stranger Things: The Immersive Experience at Netflix House Philadelphia and Stranger Things: Face the Dark at Netflix House Dallas.
What is still unknown about Other Worlds?
Most of it. Netflix has given the title, the decade, the premiere year, the creative team and a teaser.
As of Nov. 7, 2026, none of the following had been announced:
- The cast
- A premiere month or date beyond 2028
- The number of episodes or seasons
- A plot description beyond the teaser and the 1950s setting
- When filming starts (reported for 2027, not confirmed by Netflix)
- Whether Netflix will release the filmed version of The First Shadow, and when
The Duffers’ statement says casting is next.
