Rex is the new character to know. He has been alone on the island long enough to understand its dinosaurs better than anyone, and he is the reason the pups can work with the animals rather than simply flee them.

The crisis starts with greed rather than with the dinosaurs. Humdinger and his crew find a diamond seam and use explosives on it, and the blast wakes the dormant volcano under the island. Everything after that is a rescue rather than a fight — the threat is the mountain, and Humdinger becomes another person who needs saving.

Marshall’s climb is the climax. He gets above the lava flow that is bearing down on where everyone is sheltering and releases water onto it, and his partner in that is Rhubarb, the baby T-Rex he pulled out of a river earlier in the film. The film has spent its running time on Marshall being the pup who fumbles things, so handing him the save is the point rather than a coincidence.
