Outer Banks is over. All ten episodes of the fifth and final season landed on Netflix on 20 August 2026, and the Pogues’ five-year treasure hunt has an ending — a real one, with a wedding in it.
Below: the episode list, the full cast, and a spoiler-marked breakdown of how the series finishes. The spoiler section is flagged before it starts.
How many episodes are in Outer Banks Season 5?
Ten, all released at once, running eight and a half hours in total. There is no split into parts this time — Season 4 was divided, this one was not.
| Ep | Title | Run |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Crossing | 52m |
| 2 | The Crown | 41m |
| 3 | The Square Grouper | 54m |
| 4 | Inside Job | 50m |
| 5 | The Scytale | 44m |
| 6 | The Big Easy | 50m |
| 7 | Bal des Sauvages | 49m |
| 8 | The Runway Part 2 | 46m |
| 9 | Arise, Arise | 52m |
| 10 | The Storm and What Came After | 1h 9m |
Two titles are doing work before you press play. Episode eight is called The Runway Part 2, calling back to the eighth episode of Season 1, and the finale is called The Storm and What Came After — which tells you both that a storm is coming and that the show intends to stay past it.
What happens in each episode of Outer Banks Season 5?
The season opens in Morocco in the immediate aftermath of JJ’s death and works its way home to Kildare, taking in Dubrovnik, New Orleans and Azerbaijan on the way. These are Netflix’s own episode descriptions, so they set each hour up rather than give away how it resolves.
- 1. The Crossing — Grieving and stranded in Morocco, the Pogues run a dangerous border crossing chasing Groff and the Blue Crown.
- 2. The Crown — Kiara makes an uneasy deal with a rival to keep her revenge alive; Groff’s plan to get rich falls apart in Dubrovnik.
- 3. The Square Grouper — A hostile homecoming to the OBX leaves the crew at rock bottom, until John B lands a lucrative catch.
- 4. Inside Job — With Sarah in danger, Rafe runs interference at a Kook golf tournament while John B attempts a heist in Figure 8.
- 5. The Scytale — Kiara and Pope hunt an artifact that could unlock the Crown; Rafe is pushed to sell Tannyhill to developers.
- 6. The Big Easy — Sarah and John B follow a lead to New Orleans, where Sarah meets someone from her past.
- 7. Bal des Sauvages — The Pogues infiltrate a masquerade party, and Kiara’s pursuit of the scytale drawings puts her in front of a killer.
- 8. The Runway Part 2 — The scytale gets decoded, Rafe becomes a wanted man after a violent mistake, and Cleo makes an explosive move.
- 9. Arise, Arise — An Azerbaijan mission goes wrong when Pope springs an ambush, and Kiara races the Corsairs to test whether the Crown can raise the dead.
- 10. The Storm and What Came After — A hurricane hits Kildare and the Pogues race to save their families and settle the score.
Who is in the Outer Banks Season 5 cast?
The six Pogues and the Kooks are all back, including Rudy Pankow in the credits despite JJ’s death. Netflix’s own cast guide sorts the show into five groups; the two below are the ones most people are looking for.
| Actor | Plays |
|---|---|
| Chase Stokes | John B Routledge |
| Madelyn Cline | Sarah Cameron |
| Madison Bailey | Kiara “Kie” Carrera |
| Jonathan Daviss | Pope Heyward |
| Carlacia Grant | Cleo |
| Rudy Pankow | JJ Maybank |
| Drew Starkey | Rafe Cameron |
| Fiona Palomo | Sofia |
| Austin North | Topper |
| Mia Challis | Ruthie |
The wider cast is where the season’s antagonists sit. J. Anthony Crane plays Chandler Groff, JJ’s father and the man who killed him. Jason Alan Carvell plays Anton Finch, who leads the Corsairs. Charles Esten returns as Ward Cameron, Charles Halford as Big John, Cullen Moss as deputy Shoupe and E. Roger Mitchell as Pope’s father Heyward — who has a larger part in the finale than the credits order suggests. Elizabeth Mitchell, Andy McQueen, Pollyanna McIntosh and Rigo Sanchez fill out the treasure-hunting side.
Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke created the series and see it out.
How does Outer Banks Season 5 end?
The Pogues get their happy ending: they recover the Royal Merchant gold, use it to buy back their island, and Sarah and John B get married at the rebuilt Chateau with a newborn daughter named JJ. It is the win the show has withheld for five seasons.
⚠️ Full spoilers for the finale from here.
The last two hours split cleanly. Episode nine is the Blue Crown; episode ten is a hurricane. Kiara takes the Crown from Anton Finch, leader of the Corsairs, and gets it to a prophesied lake in Azerbaijan, reciting its incantation as a meteor shower starts. The Corsairs then find her and take the Crown straight back — so the Pogues never keep the thing they spent two seasons chasing.
Episode ten evacuates Kildare. The creators have said they wanted hurricanes to bookend the show, and this one puts Pope and his father Heyward clinging to the “Outer Banks — Paradise on Earth” welcome sign until John B and Sarah reach them by boat.
Kiara finishes it. Hearing that a Kook yacht has been stolen near Blackstone Manor, she works out it is Groff, boards the boat before he can leave, and kills him — the one thing the season has been pointed at since Morocco. Her SOS gives the Pogues coordinates, and Pope’s arithmetic turns those coordinates into the Royal Merchant gold.
What they do with it is the actual ending. They buy back land on the island, rebuild the Chateau exactly as it was, restore Tannyhill, and put a bench on the beach reading “In Memory of JJ Maybank” with P4L etched into it by Kiara. Kiara takes a marine biology internship. Pope flies to the Bahamas and proposes to Cleo, on his second attempt. Sarah has a daughter, they name her JJ, and Heyward officiates the wedding in the Chateau’s backyard under string lights.
Does JJ come back in Outer Banks Season 5?
No — not in body. Rudy Pankow makes no new appearances across the season. JJ is dead when it opens and dead when it closes.
What the Blue Crown produces in episode nine is memory rather than resurrection. As Kiara says the incantation, she moves through her history with JJ, back as far as the two of them saving a dolphin as children, with a younger JJ played by Hudson Brooks. Shannon Burke told Netflix the aim was to thread a needle: no corporal return, but something that still satisfies.
Whether the Crown has any real power is left unresolved on purpose. Burke’s own account is that the show goes right up to the edge, and that he and Jonas Pate would answer the question differently.
What happens to Rafe in the Outer Banks finale?
He breaks Sofia out of jail, is deliberately let go by Shoupe, and leaves the Outer Banks as a fugitive. His goodbye with Sarah is the most painful in the episode — an apology, a hug, and the understanding that he cannot come back.
He does not attend the wedding. He appears during the credits instead, joining it by FaceTime, which is about as much redemption as the show is prepared to grant him. Madelyn Cline’s reading of it is that Sarah will always love her brother while forgiveness stays a long way off.
Is Outer Banks really finished?
Yes. Season 5 was made and released as the final season, and the finale closes every thread it opened. Nothing is left dangling for a sixth run — the gold is found, the villain is dead, the island is rebuilt and the survivors are placed.

How we verified this
This is an ending-explained piece where the distributor explained the ending itself, which is rare enough to be worth saying out loud. Netflix published its own finale breakdown on release day, written by Tara Bitran and Thea Glassman, carrying direct quotes from the cast and from all three creators. Every plot statement on this page traces to that article or to Netflix’s own title page, not to third-party recaps.
✅ Episode titles, runtimes and summaries come from Netflix’s own listing — ten episodes running 52, 41, 54, 50, 44, 50, 49, 46, 52 and 69 minutes. The summaries below are paraphrased from Netflix’s episode descriptions rather than reproduced, and for episodes one to eight they describe setups rather than outcomes, because that is all Netflix’s descriptions contain.
⚠️ The Netflix episode list defaults to Season 1 and will quietly give you the wrong titles. Left alone it shows Pilot, The Lucky Compass and the rest of the 2020 run. Season 5 requires switching the season control. This is the same default-to-first-season behaviour BBC iPlayer has, and the titles look plausible enough that it is easy to miss.
🔴 No US maturity rating appears on this page, deliberately. Netflix redirected this connection to its Taiwan store and priced in TWD, so the only classification visible was Taiwan’s 16+. Episode titles, runtimes and synopses are global content metadata and are used; a regional age rating is not, and no claim about US availability is made from that page either.
✅ The Instagram handles were taken from Netflix’s own cast guide rather than guessed, and that decision mattered. Before finding them, nine plausible-looking handles were tested and five were wrong — and three of those five carried display names close enough to fool a name check. The account at chasestokes reads “Chase stokes” and has 302 followers; madisonbailey is a different person called Madison Webb; jonathandaviss is a Jonathan Davis with one S; rudypankow and austinnorth are dormant accounts with no posts at all. Netflix links hichasestokes, madisonbaileybabe, jonathandavissofficial and rudeth instead.
⚠️ Each linked account was still checked independently, and two cast members are unlinked because that check could not finish. Instagram began rate-limiting partway through, which shows up as a generic og:title of just “Instagram” with no profile data — neither a pass nor a fail. Austin North and Mia Challis fell into that gap and are left unlinked rather than linked on Netflix’s word alone.
