Newcastle Knights Fans Injured by Car in Wallsend: What NSW Police Have Confirmed So Far

- 🔑 A car struck Newcastle Knights supporters lining Newcastle Link Road at Wallsend, New South Wales, at about 9.30am AEST on Saturday 3 October 2026, injuring 10 people. All were taken to John Hunter Hospital, and no deaths had been reported as of about 6.30am AEDT on Sunday 4 October 2026.
- NSW Police say the 18-year-old P-plate driver was arrested at the scene and charged on the evening of Saturday 3 October 2026 with nine offences, including dangerous driving and negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. He was refused bail. These are allegations that have not been tested in court.
- Police say the driver is due to appear in the Bail Division (Court 2) on Sunday 4 October 2026. No report of that hearing had appeared when we checked, so its outcome is not covered here. We will update this page in place if police or the court announce anything further.
- Police describe the 5-year-old girl as critical but now stable and a 67-year-old man as serious but stable. Four others remain in hospital in a stable condition, including another girl aged 5 and a girl aged 2, and four adults have been discharged, according to the latest police statement.
- Assistant Commissioner Dave Waddell said the crash was not terror-related and that there was no suggestion at all it was targeted. Police say the driver lost control of the car, and Waddell left questions about how it was being driven to the Crash Investigation Unit.
- This page covers Newcastle in New South Wales, not Newcastle upon Tyne. It reports only what NSW Police and other official statements say, leaves out unconfirmed witness accounts and does not name the driver or any injured person. No betting odds or win probabilities are used.
A car struck a crowd of Newcastle Knights supporters on Newcastle Link Road at Wallsend, New South Wales, at about 9.30am AEST on Saturday 3 October 2026, injuring 10 people, and NSW Police have since charged the 18-year-old P-plate (provisional licence) driver. This page is pinned to about 6.30am AEDT on Sunday 4 October 2026 (8.30pm BST and 3.30pm EDT on Saturday 3 October 2026) and reports only what police and other officials have said. The charges are allegations that have not been tested in court, and this is Newcastle in New South Wales, not Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
What happened at Wallsend on Saturday 3 October 2026?
At about 9.30am AEST, a car struck supporters who had gathered along Newcastle Link Road at Wallsend to farewell the Newcastle Knights team bus. NSW Police say officers were called to the Transfield Drive roundabout on Newcastle Link Road after reports that a vehicle had struck several people. The send-off was ahead of the NRL Grand Final between the Sydney Roosters and the Knights on Sunday 4 October 2026.
Police say the driver lost control of the car and went into the crowd. Assistant Commissioner Dave Waddell left questions about how the car was being driven to the Crash Investigation Unit. NSW Ambulance said help from bystanders made paramedics’ work easier.
Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions and, according to the public broadcaster, reopened by about 3.33pm AEST. The Knights said the farewell procession was diverted because of a major incident, and the team travelled on to Sydney.
Has anyone been charged?
Yes: NSW Police say the 18-year-old driver was charged on the evening of Saturday 3 October 2026 and refused bail. The nine offences police listed are:
- three counts of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm
- three counts of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm
- three counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct while in charge of a motor vehicle
Police say the driver is due to appear in the Bail Division (Court 2) on Sunday 4 October 2026 and that his licence has been suspended. He was arrested at the scene. These are allegations, no court has made any finding, and no report of the Sunday appearance had been published when we checked. Because the matter is now before the courts, we are limiting this page to what police and the court have stated.
How are the injured people doing?
All 10 injured people were taken to John Hunter Hospital, and no deaths had been reported as of about 6.30am AEDT on Sunday 4 October 2026. This is how NSW Police described them in the latest statement we could read, published late on Saturday 3 October 2026:
| Status | Who |
|---|---|
| Critical but now stable | Girl, 5 |
| Serious but stable | Man, 67 |
| Stable in hospital | Girls, 5 and 2; two adults |
| Discharged | Four adults |
The other seven people are adults. Earlier on Saturday, live coverage and several outlets described both the girl and the man as critical, and the number discharged has since risen. Conditions can change quickly, so treat the table as a snapshot. We have not given adult ages because published lists differ, and we are not naming anyone.
Do police say it was deliberate or terror-related?
No: Assistant Commissioner Dave Waddell said the crash was not terror-related and that nothing suggested it was targeted. He said there was “no suggestion at all” of targeting or ill motive and called it a tragic incident. Other reports of his briefing say police did not believe it was deliberate. Police have not given a motive or a cause beyond saying the driver lost control, and the Crash Investigation Unit’s inquiries continue.
What has not been confirmed?
Several points are unconfirmed at the time of writing, including the cause of the crash, any drug and alcohol test results and what the Crash Investigation Unit will find. Police said the driver underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing after his arrest, but no results have been released and we draw no conclusions. We have also left out unverified witness accounts, details about anyone’s private life and figures that only one outlet reported, such as the number of emergency vehicles and the size of the crowd.
Who should people contact with information?
Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, as NSW Police asked in their first statement about the crash. The release says information is managed on a confidential basis. The later charge statement we read did not repeat the appeal.
What happens next?
The next confirmed step is the driver’s appearance in the Bail Division (Court 2) on Sunday 4 October 2026. The NRL Grand Final between the Sydney Roosters and the Knights is scheduled for 7.30pm AEDT that day, and we saw no announcement of any change. This page does not report or predict the result.
We will update this page in place after the court appearance and if police give new information, so check the pinned time at the top before relying on any figure here.
How we verified this
✅ Pinned to a time. Written at about 6.30am AEDT on Sunday 4 October 2026 (8.30pm BST and 3.30pm EDT on Saturday 3 October 2026). The crash happened at about 9.30am on Saturday 3 October 2026, before NSW daylight saving began at 2am on Sunday 4 October, so Saturday times on this page are AEST (UTC+10) and Sunday times are AEDT (UTC+11).
✅ Charges, bail and the court date come from NSW Police’s own charge statement. We read the force’s media release as republished by a press-release service, because the force’s own website could not be opened. A regional daily newspaper’s report carries the same offence names and counts, and headlines from at least five other news organisations of different ownership confirm the driver was charged. Only the regional report and the police statement were read in full for the offence list.
✅ The injury total and children’s ages were cross-checked. Ten injured, all taken to John Hunter Hospital, and three girls aged 5, 5 and 2 match across the police statement, the public broadcaster, a second national broadcaster, a regional daily and a national news site. Each person’s condition is as given in the latest police statement we could read, published late on Saturday 3 October 2026.
⚠️ Conflicts between sources, and what we followed. The public broadcaster’s live coverage, last updated on Saturday evening AEST, said three people had been discharged and one patient remained critical. The later police statement says four were discharged and the 5-year-old girl is critical but now stable, and we followed the later police statement. Earlier reports of seven or nine injured, and of both the girl and the man being critical, were superseded. One outlet gave a different street name for the crash location, and we followed police. Published lists of the adult victims’ ages differ, so no adult ages are given except the 67-year-old man’s, which police and several outlets agree on.
⚠️ Police wording on how the car was being driven differs between relays. Some reports quote Assistant Commissioner Waddell using a descriptive word about the driving, while another has him leaving that question to the Crash Investigation Unit. Because charges are now before the court, we used only the lost-control wording, the referral to the unit and his statement that the crash was not terror-related and not targeted.
⚠️ Left out on purpose. Unconfirmed witness accounts, speculation about cause or motive, details about anyone’s private life, and single-source figures such as the number of emergency vehicles and the size of the crowd. We have not named the driver or any injured person. The charges are allegations, and the driver is presumed innocent unless a court finds otherwise. Reports that one child was in an induced coma came from media outlets, not police, and are not used.
🔴 Still moving at write time. The driver’s Bail Division appearance on Sunday 4 October 2026 had not been reported, injured people’s conditions can change, and police may release more. The NRL Grand Final was still to be played and this page neither reports nor predicts the result. No betting odds, spreads, or win-probability models appear anywhere on this page.
