⚠️ That number is an illustration, not a forecast, and the distinction matters. It assumes the four availabilities are independent, which they are not: injuries cluster, rest days get coordinated, and a healthier Embiid changes how heavily everyone else is used. That is the difference between two completely different stories. A 12-game season would mean a franchise centre in terminal decline and a signing built on hope. He has scored more in the playoffs than the regular season in each of the last three years, and last season’s playoff run came on 38.4 minutes a night across 10 games.
Playoff samples are small — five, five and ten games — so read the direction rather than the decimals. But the direction is consistent, and it points at something specific: the declining regular-season numbers may be measuring what he is choosing to do in January rather than what he can do in May.
That is exactly the player a team with title ambitions and a fragile centre would want. It is also the reading his own contract implies — he took the minimum on a two-year deal, which is the shape of a bet on a short competitive window rather than a long farewell.
So can they win it?

The market moved hard on the news. Philadelphia went from +2200 to +1000 on the signing, roughly doubling their implied probability from about 4.4% to about 9.1%, and one prediction market has them near 12–13%.

Fourth favourite is the honest answer, and it is a fair one. The reasons to believe are real: four legitimate stars, a genuine two-way wing in Brown, a guard in Maxey coming off a career year, and a player in James who demonstrably raises his output when the games matter. Add a healthy Embiid and this team beats anyone in a seven-game series.
The reasons to doubt are equally real, and they are not about talent.
- Availability is the whole thesis. Around 21 shared games is not enough to build continuity, and playoff basketball punishes teams that have not played together.
- Minutes are already stretched. Maxey led the league in minutes per game last season and Edgecombe averaged 35.0 as a rookie. That is a team that was running hot before adding a 41-year-old who needs load management of his own.
- The apron is a hard ceiling. Hard-capped at the first apron, Philadelphia cannot trade its way out of a mid-season injury the way a team with flexibility could. The roster they have is close to the roster they get.
- The East is not clear. The Knicks are the defending champions and the Thunder and Spurs are ahead of everyone in the title market.
Our read: this is a well-constructed bet on a narrow window rather than a superteam that wins by default. If Embiid plays 60-plus games, they are the best team in the East and a genuine title threat. If he plays 38 again, they are a dangerous playoff opponent who will probably lose to somebody healthier. Everything else — LeBron’s age, the fit, the minutes — is secondary to that one number.
Which is a strange thing to say about a signing this loud. The most consequential player in Philadelphia’s title odds is not the one who just arrived.
