Lanterns on HBO Max: Cast, Episode Schedule and Recaps

- Aaron Pierre plays John Stewart and Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, with Nathan Fillion returning as Guy Gardner from Superman. Ulrich Thomsen plays Thaal Sinestro and Laura Linney a Guardian of the Universe.
- It is a detective story, not a space epic, and it runs on two timelines — 2016 and 2026 — in a small Nebraska town. Knowing that before episode 1 will save some confusion. Critics have been unusually warm: around 90% on Rotten Tomatoes against 25% for the 2011 Green Lantern film.

That is worth saying plainly, because it is the honest answer to half of what people are searching for right now: there are no episode recaps yet, anywhere. What follows is the full cast, all eight episode dates for both countries, and how to watch — and the recaps will be added here as episodes land.
When does Lanterns start?

The UK time is a straight simulcast of the US broadcast, which is why it lands in the middle of the night. If you are not planning to be awake for it, it simply sits there on Monday morning.

How do you watch Lanterns in the US?
On HBO or HBO Max . Episodes air on the linear HBO channel at 9pm ET and stream on HBO Max at the same time, so there is no waiting period between the two.
How do you watch Lanterns in the UK?
Three routes — and you may already have one of them without knowing.
This is the part worth checking before you pay for anything, because UK access to HBO shows changed significantly this year.

The detail that catches people out: when HBO Max launched, a lot of UK households were given it automatically.

So check your existing account before paying for a separate subscription. If you do have the included tier and want to lose the ads, Sky customers can upgrade to Standard for about £5 a month more, or Premium — 4K, four devices — for about £10 more.
Sky Atlantic has not been dropped from the arrangement: HBO series continue to air there simultaneously with HBO Max.

Two of those are worth flagging for anyone who knows the comics. Ulrich Thomsen is playing Thaal Sinestro — the Green Lantern mythology’s most important villain — and Laura Linney is a Guardian of the Universe, one of the beings who run the Corps. Neither is a small role in that world.
Nathan Fillion returns as Guy Gardner, the same character he played in Superman, which is the clearest thread tying this series to the wider DC film slate.
Four more performers appear on some cast lists without a confirmed character: J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus and Nicole Ari Parker. We have left their roles blank rather than guess.
Who made Lanterns?
Chris Mundy is the showrunner, working with Damon Lindelof and Tom King. Lindelof’s television credits include Lost and Watchmen; King is one of the most prominent DC comics writers of the last decade.
That combination tells you more about the show’s intentions than any trailer. This is not a team assembled to make a space opera.
What is Lanterns actually about?
It is a detective story set in a small Nebraska town, not a cosmic epic.
John Stewart is a new Green Lantern recruit. Hal Jordan is the veteran assigned as his mentor and partner. Together they investigate a shooting in Rushville, Nebraska, and the case opens onto something much larger.
One structural thing is worth knowing before you press play: the series runs on two timelines, 2016 and 2026. Going in expecting a linear story is the most likely way to spend the first episode confused. Critics have repeatedly reached for True Detective as the comparison, which gives a fair sense of the register.
Where are the episode recaps?
There are none yet, because no episode has aired. Episode 1 is still hours away as this is published.
Be wary of anything already labelled a Lanterns “recap” today. Reviews from press screeners have been out since the embargo lifted on 14 August, and some of them contain detail from later episodes. A recap written before broadcast is either a review, a trailer description, or a spoiler.

Is Lanterns any good?
Critics have been unusually positive, and the contrast with the franchise’s history is the story.

The Rotten Tomatoes figure moved between 89% and 91% across 14–15 August as more reviews landed, which is normal for a score in its first days rather than a discrepancy.
The praise clusters on the same points: the Chandler and Pierre pairing, and the decision to make a grounded detective drama rather than a special-effects showcase. Within the current DC slate it sits below The Penguin, which reached 95%.
What to do now
- In the US, it is on tonight at 9pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.
- In the UK, check your Sky or NOW account before subscribing to anything — you may already have HBO Max included.
- Set a weekly reminder. Eight weeks, Sunday nights US, Monday UK, finishing 4 October.
- Go in knowing it moves between 2016 and 2026. That single fact will make episode 1 much easier to follow.

How we verified this
There are no recaps on this page yet, and that is a statement of fact rather than an omission. At the time of writing, episode 1 was still about ten hours from airing. Any page already offering a “recap” of this series is describing a screener, a trailer or a press kit, not an episode you can watch. We will add recaps as episodes air and update the date stamp when we do.
The schedule was calculated and cross-checked, not copied. We took the 16 August premiere and the 4 October finale from the release-schedule coverage, then generated all eight weekly dates independently and confirmed the endpoints match. The UK times follow from the US simulcast: 9pm ET is 2am BST the following day.
The UK availability was verified separately because it changed this year. HBO Max launched in the UK and Ireland on 26 March 2026, after the exclusive Sky deal signed in 2019 expired. Sky Ultimate TV and Sky Q subscribers had HBO Max Basic with Ads added automatically, and NOW Entertainment members were moved to a bundle including it. We say “may already have access” rather than “do”, because plan tiers vary and we cannot see anyone’s account.
Character names come from a cast breakdown that lists them, not from the general coverage. Several widely-shared cast lists give only actor names. Four performers named in some lists — J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus and Nicole Ari Parker — appear without confirmed character names in the sources we could check, so they are listed as credited without a role rather than being assigned a guess.
We could not find an official HBO page for the series and are not treating that as meaningful. Guessed URLs on hbo.com, hbomax.com and dc.com all returned 404 — but guessing slugs is unreliable evidence, so we make no claim about whether an official page exists. What we did verify is that the platforms themselves are live: hbomax.com and Sky’s Sky Atlantic page both return real pages while invented paths on the same hosts return 404. NOW’s site blocked our checks entirely, so it is named but not linked.
The Rotten Tomatoes figure is a moving number and is stamped accordingly. Reports on 14–15 August variously gave 89%, 90% from 40 critics and 91% from 23 critics — the differences are the score updating as reviews arrive, not a contradiction. We give it as “around 90%” with the critic count and date rather than a false precision.
No plot detail beyond the official premise is included. Reviews from screeners are circulating and some carry spoilers for later episodes. This page is a schedule, cast and access guide, and the recaps will come from watching the episodes as they air.
