Key takeaways
  • The Jets play at Detroit on Sunday 27 September 2026 at 1:00 PM ET (10:00 AM PT) at Ford Field, on FOX. The stadium has a fixed roof, so weather is not a factor.
  • Through Week 2 the Jets have allowed 197 yards a game, the fewest in the NFL. Detroit has scored 31 points in both of its games, and Jared Goff has 6 touchdown passes and no interceptions.
  • The reverse matchup is the other half of the game. Detroit has allowed 457.5 yards a game, 31st of 32, and the Jets’ offense has scored four touchdowns in two games.
  • Detroit has lost DB Avonte Maddox for the season and cannot activate safeties Brian Branch or Kerby Joseph before Week 5. The Jets have rookie WR Omar Cooper Jr. on injured reserve, and there has been no update on five players hurt against Green Bay.
  • This page was written on 22 September 2026, before the first official Week 3 injury reports on 23 September, so no player named here has an official game designation yet.
  • Our pick is Lions 27, Jets 20. That is the site’s judgement from box scores and injury news. It is not odds and it is not a model.

We pick the Lions, 27–20. The Jets have allowed 197 yards a game, fewest in the NFL, but the two offenses they faced passed for 127 and 136 net yards, and Detroit has scored 31 in both of its games. The reverse matchup matters just as much: Detroit’s defense ranks 31st in yards allowed, and a Jets offense with four touchdowns in two games has not shown it can take advantage.

How have the Jets and Lions played so far?

Both teams are 1–1. The Jets won 23–10 at Tennessee and lost 20–17 in overtime at home to Green Bay. Detroit beat New Orleans 31–30 in overtime at Ford Field, then lost 41–31 at Buffalo in a Thursday night game.

Both teams have already lost a big lead. The Jets led Green Bay 17–7 early in the fourth quarter. Skyy Moore’s 63-yard punt return then set up the tying field goal with 2:59 left, and the Jets’ first overtime possession went nowhere: two sacks and a false start, per ESPN’s recap. Detroit led New Orleans 21–0 in the third quarter and let the Saints tie it with 1:07 left. The Lions won only because the Saints went for two in overtime and the pass fell incomplete. At Buffalo, Detroit trailed 21–0 midway through the second quarter.

Can the Jets’ defense stop Detroit’s offense?

The Jets have the best numbers of any defense in the league: 197 yards a game allowed, the fewest in the NFL through Week 2 according to ESPN’s league table (Seattle is next at 214), plus 15 points a game and opponents converting 5 of 21 third downs. They have not yet faced an offense like Detroit’s. The Lions have scored 31 points in both games, and Jared Goff has completed 52 of 77 passes for 533 yards, 6 touchdowns and no interceptions.

The two offenses the Jets shut down were limited ones. Tennessee’s Cam Ward passed for 127 yards and Green Bay’s Jordan Love for 145. Goff passed for 327 at Buffalo alone. Amon-Ra St. Brown has 19 catches for 209 yards and four touchdowns, two in each game.

The Jets’ best chance is against the run. They have allowed 65.5 rushing yards a game, second-fewest in the NFL behind Atlanta by NFL.com’s count, and Detroit’s ground game depends on one player. David Montgomery was traded to Houston in March and Isiah Pacheco is on injured reserve after back surgery. That leaves Jahmyr Gibbs with 45 of the Lions’ 50 running-back carries. He ran 29 times for 156 yards and two touchdowns against New Orleans, and 16 times for 52 yards at Buffalo, where Detroit spent the game catching up. The Jets’ 5-of-21 third-down figure comes from winning first and second down, and that means stopping Gibbs.

We think the red zone decides it. Detroit has scored touchdowns on 7 of 9 trips inside the 20, and the Jets have allowed touchdowns on 3 of 5. The Jets’ pass rush has six sacks, two of them by Kingsley Enagbare. Goff was sacked once in Week 1 and four times at Buffalo, where Detroit played without its starting right tackle, Blake Miller, and left guard, Christian Mahogany.

Can the Jets’ offense hurt Detroit’s defense?

It should move the ball, but it may not score enough touchdowns. Detroit has allowed 457.5 yards and 35.5 points a game, 147 rushing yards a game, and touchdowns on 9 of 10 red-zone trips. The Jets’ offense has four touchdowns in two games, only one of them through the air, and has converted 10 of 31 third downs.

The Jets play keep-away. Their time of possession was 38:46 at Tennessee and 37:40 against Green Bay, which is the right approach against a defense that lets opponents convert 17 of 29 third downs and keeps Goff on the sideline. Geno Smith, acquired from Las Vegas in March, has been careful: 46 of 65 for 462 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. But Green Bay sacked him four times, and Breece Hall went from 22 carries for 102 yards at Tennessee to 16 for 29 against the Packers.

Detroit’s secondary is the weak spot. Tyler Shough threw for 410 yards against it in Week 1, 182 of them to Chris Olave, and Josh Allen threw three touchdowns in Week 2. Since then, DB Avonte Maddox has been ruled out for the season: he was hurt in the second quarter at Buffalo, and Campbell said on 21 September that he needs foot surgery. Safeties Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph are on reserve/PUP and cannot be activated before Week 5. Detroit signed veteran safety Jalen Mills to its practice squad, according to the team’s Lions Daily roundup on 22 September.

The Jets have not found a way to attack that secondary yet. Garrett Wilson has 11 catches for 136 yards and Adonai Mitchell 9 for 123. First-round rookie Omar Cooper Jr. is on injured reserve, and tight end Mason Taylor hurt his thumb against Green Bay. Aidan Hutchinson has three sacks. The Jets have also committed 21 penalties for 204 yards, 13 for 156 of them against the Packers.

Does Aaron Glenn’s return to Detroit matter?

A little. Glenn was Detroit’s defensive coordinator from 2021 to 2024, including the Lions’ 20–17 win over the Jets in December 2022, and this is his first game against his old team. He knows Campbell, Goff and St. Brown well. But Detroit’s offensive coordinator, Drew Petzing, was hired on 26 January 2026, and familiarity does not change the personnel on either side.

His defensive coordinator, Brian Duker, also worked in Detroit, as the Lions’ defensive backs coach in 2023. The Jets went 3–14 in 2025, Glenn’s first season, and Detroit went 9–8 and missed the playoffs.

Who is injured for Jets vs Lions?

No player has an official Week 3 designation yet. The first injury reports come on Wednesday 23 September and final designations on Friday 25 September. As of 22 September, the Jets have WR Omar Cooper Jr. on injured reserve and no update on five players hurt against Green Bay. Detroit has lost DB Avonte Maddox for the season and cannot use safeties Brian Branch or Kerby Joseph. Campbell says RT Blake Miller is “trending the right way” to play.

Campbell’s comments on Miller and Mahogany were made on Detroit radio station 97.1 The Ticket on 22 September, as reported by Heavy. For Pacheco, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on 14 September a timeline of about 12 weeks. ESPN’s injury pages put “Questionable” next to many of these names. That is ESPN’s placeholder label, not a team or league designation.

What is the Jets vs Lions head-to-head record?

Detroit leads the regular-season series 8–7, and the teams have never met in the playoffs. Their last game was a 20–17 Lions win at MetLife Stadium on Sunday 18 December 2022. At Ford Field, the Jets are 3–0.

None of that history involves the current rosters in any way that matters. We give it no weight.

Will weather affect Jets vs Lions?

No. Ford Field has a fixed roof, so the game is played indoors. We did not pull a National Weather Service forecast because Detroit’s weather has no effect on play.

What is our Jets vs Lions prediction?

Our pick is Lions 27, Jets 20. That is the site’s judgement, reasoned from four box scores and the injury news available on 22 September. It is not a model output, and no odds were consulted.

  • Detroit’s offense is the most reliable unit in the game. It scored 31 points in both games, finished 7 of 9 red-zone trips with touchdowns and turned the ball over once. Its weak spot at Buffalo was two missing linemen and four sacks, and that should improve if Campbell is right about Miller.
  • The Jets’ defense will still cost Detroit points. We have Detroit nearer 27 than 31, with at least one drive that has been ending in a touchdown ending in a field goal instead.
  • The Jets’ offense is what holds them back. It should score against a defense that allows touchdowns on 9 of 10 red-zone trips, and 20 is its average. But matching Detroit touchdown for touchdown would take more than four touchdowns in two games, one passing touchdown, and a first-round receiver on injured reserve.
  • The smaller factors also favor Detroit. It plays at home, it has had 10 days off since its Thursday game while the Jets are on a normal week after an overtime game, and the Jets have committed 21 penalties in two weeks.

We expect Jets drives that stall into field goals and Lions drives that finish in the end zone. That difference is the margin.

What would make this prediction wrong?

It would be wrong if the Jets’ defense plays as well against Detroit as it did against Tennessee and Green Bay, if their long drives keep Goff off the field, or if injury news between Wednesday and Friday changes either line of scrimmage.

  • The Jets’ defense is as good as its numbers. If it holds Gibbs under about four yards a carry and keeps Detroit near one in three on third down, touchdowns turn into field goals and 20 points could win.
  • Ball control works. Detroit has allowed 17 of 29 third-down conversions. If the Jets keep converting and keep the ball for 38 minutes again, they could win a low-scoring game.
  • It goes the other way. If Miller and Mahogany both return and Hutchinson beats the Jets’ tackles the way Green Bay’s pass rush did in overtime, this could be a two-score Lions win.
  • Injury news. Taylor or Onyemata could be ruled out, Fitzpatrick and Ossai could return for the Jets, or Miller could have a setback, or Detroit could lose another defensive back.
  • Special teams and flags. Another 208-yard return day like Moore’s, or another 13-penalty game, could swing a one-score game either way.
  • Two games is a small sample. Every average above comes from two opponents per team.

What to check before kickoff

  • Wednesday 23 September. The first injury reports. Check whether Mahogany practices, as Campbell said was the plan, and whether Mason Taylor and David Onyemata practice.
  • Wednesday 23 September. Coverage maps showing which markets get the game on FOX.
  • Friday 25 September. Final game designations for both teams, including Fitzpatrick, Ossai and Nwangwu.
  • Sunday 27 September, about 11:30 AM ET. Inactives, about 90 minutes before kickoff.
  • Any FOX confirmation of the Amin, Brees and Pink crew.

How we verified this

✅ All four final scores were checked against ESPN box scores, and all four matched. Jets 23, Titans 10 (Sunday 13 September, Nashville). Packers 20, Jets 17 in overtime (Sunday 20 September, East Rutherford). Lions 31, Saints 30 in overtime (Sunday 13 September, Detroit). Bills 41, Lions 31 (Thursday 17 September, Orchard Park; kickoff 8:15 PM ET). Quarter-by-quarter lines were checked on ESPN’s game pages and summary feed, and team totals were cross-checked against the FOX Sports and NFL.com box scores. Every per-game average on this page is calculated from those four games.

✅ The Jets’ No. 1 ranking in yards allowed was checked against league-wide numbers, and the re-check changed our source for it. The first research pass took the ranking from a newyorkjets.com notebook published on 21 September. That piece was written before the Monday night Giants-Rams game and said the Giants might yet overtake the Jets. A second check used two methods. ESPN’s league team-defense table, with all 32 teams at two games played, puts the Jets first at 197.0 yards a game and Seattle second at 214.0. A tally of yards allowed across every Week 1 and Week 2 box score gives the same order. The same tally puts Detroit 31st at 457.5. The Jets’ rushing figure (131 yards allowed, second behind Atlanta) comes from NFL.com’s rushing table.

🔴 The adversarial re-check corrected several roster and injury claims from the first research pass. On Branch and Joseph, the first pass read Dan Campbell’s 21 September comments as ruling them out of Sunday’s game. His comments were about practice. Under the reserve/PUP rule, neither player can be activated before Week 5 whatever their progress. On Jalen Mills, the first pass had “worked out, no signing confirmed”. He signed to Detroit’s practice squad, as reported by The Detroit News on 21 September and the team’s own Lions Daily roundup on 22 September. The first pass had also credited ESPN’s game recap for the Arian Smith injury and for a Glenn quote promising updates later in the week. The recap contains neither. The injury is recorded in ESPN’s play-by-play (a punt in overtime), so it stays. We could not find the quote anywhere, so it is not on this page. The first pass also listed Brady Cook among the Jets’ backup quarterbacks. Miami claimed him on 31 August, and rookie Cade Klubnik is the backup.

⚠️ Injury status was checked against team statements and beat reporting up to 22 September, and no official Week 3 designation exists yet. ESPN’s team injury pages show “Questionable” next to many names. The re-check found that ESPN applies that label, with a 27 September return date, to every listed player as a placeholder. It is ESPN’s label, not an NFL designation, and we have not reported it as one. Christian Mahogany’s injury is given as hip because that is what Detroit’s official Week 2 report said; ESPN’s Week 1 recap called it a knee. We describe Avonte Maddox’s injury only as a foot injury because ESPN pages disagree on which foot, although the better evidence points to the left.

⚠️ The broadcast crew rests on a single source. Yahoo Sports’ Week 3 announcer list, published 22 September, puts Adam Amin, Drew Brees and Kristina Pink on this game. Awful Announcing confirms that the three work together as a 2026 FOX crew, but FOX has published no Week 3 assignment and no second outlet had one. Coverage maps showing which markets get the game were not out when we wrote this.

⚠️ The all-time series comes from StatMuse and champsorchumps.us, and their game-by-game lists agree. Pro Football Reference and footballdb returned errors, so neither was checked against an official archive. Four games, including all three at Ford Field and the 2022 meeting, were confirmed independently in ESPN’s schedule data.

⚠️ Two games is a small sample, and we could not confirm either team’s play-callers. Every average here rests on two opponents per team. Reports before the season said Drew Petzing would call Detroit’s offense and Aaron Glenn the Jets’ defense, but we could not confirm who calls either in games.

🔴 No betting odds, spreads, totals, prediction-market prices or model win probabilities were consulted, and none appear on this page. The pick was set before the re-check and it survived: the corrections either confirmed an input (the Jets’ defensive ranking) or tightened one the pick already assumed (Branch and Joseph unavailable).
