Key takeaways
  • Grand Theft Auto VI launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. No PC version has been announced — not a date, not a platform listing, nothing.
  • The date that matters for most buyers is 12 November, not 19 November. Digital pre-orders start pre-loading that day, and the physical edition reaches shops the same day — with a download code in the box rather than a disc.
  • Rockstar describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. The free month of GTA+ that comes with digital pre-orders applies to the existing GTA Online and the GTA+ Games Library, not to anything inside GTA 6.
  • The game has slipped twice: from 2025 to 26 May 2026, then to 19 November 2026. The second slip never got its own announcement — it was a bullet point in a quarterly earnings release.
  • Rockstar’s $399.99 ‘Goodtime State: Vice City Collection’ collector’s box, announced 24 September 2026, is merchandise only — eleven items, no copy of the game — and shipped straight into backlash from players calling it overpriced for what’s inside.
  • Real gameplay is now public: Rockstar’s 27 August Extended Look ran about 26 minutes, captured in-engine on PS5. Rockstar’s own developers have since put a size comparison on the map, via Game Informer’s Issue 382 — roughly twice Grand Theft Auto V’s — though no square-mileage figure or district list exists yet.

Grand Theft Auto VI comes out on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and almost everything else you have read about it is either from a press release you can check or from somebody guessing. This page separates the two.

Below is every detail Rockstar and Take-Two have actually put in writing, the full delay history with the dates each change was announced, and a plain list of the things that are still unconfirmed — including several that are widely reported as though they were settled. Everything here is correct as of 30 September 2026.

When does GTA 6 come out, and on what platforms?

19 November 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Those are the two platforms named in Rockstar’s announcement, in its pre-order announcement, and on the game’s own site. No PC version has been announced.

The date most buyers actually need is 12 November, not 19 November. That is when digital pre-orders begin pre-loading, and it is also when the physical edition arrives in shops — Rockstar puts the box on shelves a week early specifically so that physical buyers can pre-load too.

That is possible because the box does not contain a disc. It contains a download code. This has a few consequences worth thinking about before you buy: a physical copy still requires the full download, it cannot be played on a console that has been kept offline, and as a gift it is a code rather than something that works out of the packaging. It also means the usual reason to buy physical — reselling or lending it afterwards — does not apply.

The game has not been rated. Rockstar’s June pre-order announcement states plainly that it is “not yet rated”, and the ESRB database still returns no entry for it as of 30 September 2026. For a game that goes on sale in November, that is normal timing rather than a warning sign, but it does mean any rating detail you see quoted right now — including content-descriptor lists that trace back to a Sony marketing email rather than to Rockstar or the ESRB — is somebody’s expectation, not a filed rating.

What has Rockstar actually confirmed about GTA 6?

A single-player game set in the state of Leonida, led by two protagonists, launching at $79.99 with an optional $99.99 edition. Everything in this section comes from Rockstar’s own site or from Take-Two’s filed press releases.

  • It is a single-player experience. That is the phrase used in the pre-order announcement. No online or multiplayer component for GTA 6 has been announced.
  • Two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, whose story runs through the whole game — Rockstar describes the Ultimate Edition content as “threaded across all aspects of Jason and Lucia’s story”.
  • The setting is the state of Leonida, with Vice City at its centre. Rockstar has named six areas: Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga.
  • Two editions only, at $79.99 and $99.99.
  • A pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack, included with any pre-order and with any purchase made before 20 November 2026 — so it is not restricted to people who commit early. Our GTA 6 pre-order guide lists what is in it.
  • A free month of GTA+ for digital pre-orders. Read this one carefully, because it is the most misread item on the list — see below.
  • Grand Theft Auto has sold in over 470 million units across the series, per Rockstar’s own June 2026 figure.

The GTA+ month is not for GTA 6. Rockstar’s announcement describes the free month as the best way to get the most out of “the ever-evolving world of GTA Online”, redeemable immediately so that players can jump into Grand Theft Auto V and other titles in the GTA+ Games Library. In other words it is a month of the existing subscription attached to the existing game, redeemable the moment you pre-order rather than in November. It is a real perk, and it has nothing to do with anything inside GTA 6.

What’s new since 26 August: the Extended Look, the Collector’s Edition box and Issue 382

Since this page’s last full check, Rockstar’s 27 August Extended Look aired as scheduled and showed real, in-engine gameplay for the first time; a $399.99 merchandise-only collector’s box went on sale and drew backlash; and Game Informer’s Issue 382 cover story, previewed below in an earlier update, has now gone live and confirmed specifics of its own.

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix and then Rockstar’s own YouTube channel on 27 August 2026, exactly as scheduled. Per Rockstar’s own site, and corroborated by outlets including Kotaku that watched it live, it ran roughly 26 minutes and was captured entirely in-engine on PlayStation 5 — Jason and Lucia collecting a delivery in Vice City, a drug deal that goes wrong, a shootout and a getaway drive. That resolves the single biggest item this page had previously flagged as unconfirmed: gameplay footage now exists in public, on Rockstar’s own channels.

The Goodtime State: Vice City Collection

DetailConfirmed

Price$399.99
Announced24 September 2026, Rockstar Games Store / Newswire
Includes the gameNo — sold separately
Ships19 November 2026, alongside the game
LimitOne per customer

Rockstar’s own store listing is explicit that this is merchandise, not the game: Grand Theft Auto VI is sold separately. The $399.99 box is themed around Macca the Gator, a fictional Leonida TV mascot, and contains eleven items — a Macca the Gator figure, Oakley Frogskins sunglasses with Prizm Sapphire lenses, a Leonida Keys crossbody bag, a New Era 9FORTY snapback cap, a Macca the Gator magnetic mirror, a Chunkee the Manatee shot glass, a Vice City swizzle spoon, a Vice City razor-blade keychain, nine Leonida Keys enamel pins in a tin, a sticker pack, and a double-sided poster with a map of Leonida on the back.

It shipped straight into backlash. Outlets with no shared parent company — Kotaku, GamingBible, TheGamer and NotebookCheck among them — reported fans calling the contents “junk” and “slop” online, with some publicly cancelling their pre-orders, on the grounds that $400 buys eleven trinkets and not one copy of the actual game. The complaint sharpened around the same week Rockstar separately confirmed Grand Theft Auto VI: The Album, a soundtrack release that does get real physical formats — a $19.98 CD, a $50 vinyl and a $125 deluxe vinyl edition — while the $79.99–$99.99 game itself still ships as a download code with no disc, as described above. Several outlets drew that contrast directly.

Game Informer’s Issue 382 cover story

Game Informer’s own site confirmed on 25 September 2026 that GTA 6 is the cover story of its Issue 382: a 14-page feature built on interviews with Rockstar staff, illustrated with 12 new screenshots, which went live digitally on 29 September 2026, with a print edition following in the weeks after.

Game Informer named the ground the story covers: Leonida’s weather systems, the state’s wildlife, and how Rockstar researched Miami and Florida for the game’s setting, plus interviews that include Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut and Rupert Humphries. That much is confirmed, on Game Informer’s own account of its own story.

Game Informer’s own web page for the story remains behind its subscriber paywall. This site has not read the 14 pages directly. What follows instead is drawn from six outlets with no shared parent company — Video Games Chronicle, NME, The Gamer, Dexerto, Neowin and Vice — all of which report the same quotes from the same named Rockstar staff, which is treated here the same way this page treats any other well-corroborated secondary reporting of a primary source it could not read itself.

What Issue 382 actually confirmed

  • The map is roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V’s, denser and more detailed, per Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut. No square-mileage figure or district-by-district breakdown has been given — the six named areas remain the extent of what Rockstar has published in that form.
  • A rebuilt, localised weather system, including hurricanes and tropical storms, dynamic wind and persistent regional conditions rather than one weather state for the whole map — per Rockstar VP of art Owen Shepherd.
  • More than 170 animal species, including over 60 bird species and more than 30 land mammals.
  • An in-game ride-share service, RydeMe, usable as fast travel between locations.

The Jason/Lucia “relationship system” is not one of Issue 382’s confirmed items. Some outlets attached that claim to Issue 382 in advance, but it in fact traces to Vice’s own report of 11 September 2026, not to Game Informer. Vice’s own 29 September coverage of the actual Issue 382 text describes something narrower: some in-game activities are framed as dates the pair can go on together, such as hiking. Nothing resembling a meter or a mechanic that branches the story is described. That was the open question this page carried since the last update, and it is now closed in the negative — closer to “date activities exist” than to “a relationship system shapes the ending.”

Separately, and independent of Issue 382, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson described a reworked police-pursuit system to GamesRadar on 15 September 2026: police retain a longer memory of a suspect after losing sight of them, rather than forgetting almost immediately, which Nelson frames as replacing “lose the cops and you’re safe” with something that requires more planning. That is Rockstar’s own account, through a named developer, so it is treated as confirmed here even though it did not come from Game Informer.

Why was GTA 6 delayed twice?

Rockstar has never given a reason for either delay beyond wanting more time; what it has given is dates. Here is the whole sequence, with the date each change was announced rather than the date it was reported.

4 December 2023Game announced with its first trailer, “coming 2025”2025

The two delays were handled completely differently, and that is the most telling thing about them. The first got its own press release, with the old target and the new one both named and a quote from Take-Two’s chairman about supporting Rockstar in taking “additional time to realize their creative vision”. The second got no release of its own at all — it appears as a one-line bullet at the top of a quarterly earnings statement, between a net bookings figure and a raised outlook, and the CEO’s comments in that same document treat the November date as a given rather than as news.

That is a company communicating a six-month slip as a routine scheduling item rather than as an event. Whether you read that as confidence or as damage control, it is a real difference in posture between May and November 2025, and it is visible in the primary documents rather than in anyone’s interpretation of them.

Since then the date has been restated in three consecutive quarterly releases and used as the basis for the company’s stated expectation of record bookings in its 2027 financial year. A company that has tied a full-year forecast to a date in public is not in a comfortable position to move it quietly a second time.

Who are the GTA 6 characters, and where is it set?

Two playable leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, in the state of Leonida — Rockstar’s version of Florida, with Vice City standing in for Miami. The premise, in Rockstar’s own words, is that an easy score goes wrong and the pair end up inside a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state.

  • Jason Duval grew up around grifters and crooks, did a stint in the Army after a troubled adolescence, and ended up in the Keys working for local drug runners.
  • Lucia Caminos was taught to fight by her father as soon as she could walk. Fighting for her family put her in the Leonida Penitentiary; she describes getting out as luck. Her mother has wanted a better life since their days in Liberty City — the one direct link Rockstar’s character pages draw to the rest of the series.

Rockstar’s site profiles eight entries in total. Alongside the two leads it names Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Real Dimez (the duo Bae-Luxe and Roxy, signed to Only Raw Records after an early hit with a local rapper), Raul Bautista, a career bank robber, and Brian Heder, a veteran smuggler who lets Jason live rent-free on one of his properties in exchange for help with local shakedowns.

The six named areas — Vice City, the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga — were, for months, the closest thing to a confirmed map that existed. Rockstar has since added one comparative figure to that, via Game Informer’s Issue 382: co-studio head Aaron Garbut describes Leonida as roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V’s map. That is a size comparison, not a map — no square-mileage figure or district-by-district breakdown has been published, so anything you have seen presented as an actual GTA 6 map with borders and place names on it is still fan reconstruction from trailer and gameplay footage. A map screenshot did leak in August, and we set out what the outlets who saw it describe — separately from what Rockstar confirms — in the GTA 6 leaks roundup .

How much does GTA 6 cost, and what do you get for pre-ordering?

$79.99 for the Standard Edition, $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, with the Vintage Vice City Pack thrown in for anyone who buys before 20 November 2026.

At $79.99, this is the first Rockstar game to launch above the $69.99 that became standard for large releases this console generation, and it is one of the more visible tests of whether that price holds. The Ultimate Edition’s extra $20 buys premium vehicles, weapons and apparel that unlock across the story rather than arriving all at once.

Two things are worth knowing before you decide:

  • The pre-order bonus is not really a pre-order bonus. The Vintage Vice City Pack comes with any purchase made before 20 November, which is the day after launch. There is no deadline pressure to order early to get it.
  • The physical edition is a code, not a disc — so “buy physical to save money at a discounting retailer” still works, but “buy physical to own it properly” does not.

We have separate pages for the two buying questions this raises: the GTA 6 pre-order guide covers the editions, the bonus contents and how to pay less than sticker price, and the GTA 6 Ultimate Edition guide breaks down exactly what the extra $20 contains. UK readers can check the GTA 6 UK price and pre-order guide .

What is still not confirmed about GTA 6?

More than most coverage implies. These are the items regularly written about as settled that Rockstar has not stated:

Widely discussedActual status as of 30 September 2026
A PC versionNot announced — no date, no platform listing, no acknowledgement
An online or multiplayer modeNot announced. The game is described as a single-player experience
Install sizeNever stated. Every figure in circulation is an estimate
Launch unlock timeNever stated
An ESRB ratingNot yet rated. Content descriptors surfaced via a Sony marketing email in May 2026, but Rockstar’s own site and the ESRB database both still show the game as unrated
Exact map size or a district listRockstar has said the map is roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V’s, but no square-mileage figure or district-by-district breakdown has been published
A Jason/Lucia “relationship system” that affects story outcomesNot what Rockstar has described. Game Informer’s Issue 382 describes some activities as dates the pair can go on together, such as hiking — not a meter or a mechanic that branches the story

Two items that belonged on this table as recently as this page’s last update no longer do. Gameplay footage existed only as an unaired promise until 27 August 2026, when Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix and then YouTube — roughly 26 minutes, captured in-engine on PlayStation 5, the first real look at the game running rather than a cinematic trailer. And the “third trailer” question resolved into something more specific than a trailer: Rockstar never called the Extended Look one, and it turned out to be a full gameplay presentation instead.

What is the next GTA 6 news likely to be?

12 November 2026, when digital pre-loading opens and the code-in-a-box physical edition reaches shops a week ahead of launch. That is the next date already fixed on Rockstar’s own calendar, and after it this page’s “pre-order” framing starts to become “launch week” framing.

Before that, two things are worth watching without a confirmed date attached to either yet. Take-Two’s fiscal second-quarter results — the next quarterly earnings release, and so the next point at which the company restates or, in principle, changes the 19 November date — typically fall in mid-November, but Take-Two had not published the actual date as of this update. And Rockstar’s own site and the ESRB database still show the game as unrated; an ESRB rating is expected to land in the weeks before launch, going by how Rockstar has handled its last several releases, but no date for that has been given either.

The scheduled moment worth remembering from before is Take-Two’s first-quarter results, reported on Friday 7 August 2026: Strauss Zelnick’s statement there referred to “excitement around the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI” and reiterated the company’s fiscal 2027 outlook on that basis. Anything genuinely new about the game itself, as opposed to its financial framing, continues to arrive on Rockstar’s own channels — its Newswire and the game’s own site — rather than in a filing.

The bottom line

GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S at $79.99, and the practical date to put in your calendar is 12 November, when pre-loading opens and the code-in-a-box physical edition reaches shops. There is still no PC version announced and no online mode announced. What has changed since this page’s last full check is that real gameplay now exists in public — Rockstar’s 26-minute Extended Look, aired 27 August — and Rockstar’s own developers have, via Game Informer’s Issue 382, put a size comparison on the map (roughly twice Grand Theft Auto V’s) and confirmed the broad strokes of its weather and wildlife systems, while the specific “relationship system” some outlets attached to that story turns out not to be what Rockstar actually described.

The single most useful habit with this game is the one this page is built on: check whether a claim traces back to a Rockstar or Take-Two document with a date on it. Nearly everything that matters has one — and nearly everything that does not turns out to be somebody’s reasonable guess repeated until it sounded official.

How we verified this

Correct as of 26 August 2026. Everything in the confirmed sections comes from Rockstar’s own game site or from Take-Two press releases filed on its investor relations site, both re-checked on 26 August 2026.

HOW THE TIMELINE WAS BUILT. The delay history is assembled from the primary announcements themselves rather than from coverage of them, which matters here because the two delays were communicated very differently. The first has a dedicated press release naming both the old and new targets. The second exists only as a headline bullet inside a quarterly results release, so a search for “GTA 6 delay announcement” does not surface a document for it. Both were read in full, along with the three subsequent quarterly releases that restate the November date.

WHAT WE CHECKED AND DID NOT FIND. Rockstar’s game site lists Trailer 2 as its most recent video, and there is no third trailer, no gameplay demonstration and no PC announcement anywhere on it or in any Take-Two release as of 26 August 2026. The site does banner “An Extended Look, Coming August 27”, which Rockstar has not called a trailer and whose contents it has not described. The game is also still unrated: the June press release says so in as many words, and a search of the ESRB database returns no entry for it. Those are absences recorded on a date, not predictions.

WHERE WE DID NOT FOLLOW A SOURCE. Through the first week of August a large number of pages stated that a third trailer was arriving that month, and none of them cited Rockstar. On 6 August 2026 Rockstar posted “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” to its own Newswire, giving that expectation a primary source at last — but only for the date and the channels. Rockstar has not said what the presentation contains, so everything written about its contents is still kept off this page.

FAST-MOVING FIGURES. The 470 million sales figure is Rockstar’s own, as stated in its June 2026 press release, and is sold-in rather than sold-through.

UPDATE, 29 SEPTEMBER 2026. Two further items are confirmed and added below in a new section. The first is Rockstar’s $399.99 “Goodtime State: Vice City Collection” collector’s box, announced 24 September 2026 on Rockstar’s own Newswire and store listing, whose contents and “sold separately” wording were checked directly against that listing and cross-checked against Vice and Kotaku’s coverage of it; the backlash described below is drawn from outlets with no shared parent company — Kotaku, GamingBible, TheGamer and NotebookCheck among them. The second is Game Informer’s own 25 September 2026 announcement that GTA 6 is the cover story of its Issue 382, a 14-page feature going live digitally for subscribers on 29 September 2026. That announcement, and the topics Game Informer says the story covers, are confirmed on Game Informer’s own account. The actual 14 pages are not: as of this writing they sit behind Game Informer’s subscriber-only digital issue rather than as a public article this site could open and read, so the more specific gameplay claims some other outlets are already attaching to “Issue 382” — most prominently a Jason/Lucia relationship system said to affect story outcomes — are not checked against Game Informer’s actual text and are not stated as confirmed on this page. Neither of these two items changes anything else on this page; nothing in the sections above was re-verified on this pass.

UPDATE, 30 SEPTEMBER 2026. Game Informer’s Issue 382 went live as scheduled on 29 September, but its own web page remains behind Game Informer’s subscriber paywall as of this check, so the specifics below are sourced the same way the collector’s-box backlash above was: from outlets with no shared parent company that quote named Rockstar staff directly, cross-checked against each other rather than against Game Informer’s own paywalled text. Video Games Chronicle, NME, The Gamer, Dexerto, Neowin and Vice all independently report Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut describing Leonida as roughly twice the size of Grand Theft Auto V’s map, and Rockstar VP of art Owen Shepherd describing a rebuilt, localized weather system that includes hurricanes and tropical storms; the same outlets report a wildlife count above 170 species and an in-game ride-share service, RydeMe, used for fast travel. Those quotes match across all six outlets, which is why they are stated as confirmed below despite this page not having read Game Informer’s own text directly.

This pass also closes the open item from the previous update. The Jason/Lucia “relationship system” claim some outlets attached to Issue 382 in advance in fact traces to Vice’s own report of 11 September 2026, not to Game Informer. Vice’s 29 September coverage of the actual Issue 382 text describes something narrower: some in-game activities are framed as dates the pair can go on together, such as hiking, with nothing resembling a meter or a story-branching mechanic described. Separately, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson’s description of a reworked police-pursuit system with longer memory was reported by GamesRadar on 15 September 2026 — before Issue 382 and independent of it, so it is not a Game Informer disclosure either, though it is Rockstar’s own account via a named developer and is treated as confirmed on that basis.

This pass also corrects the “still not confirmed” table further down. The 27 August Extended Look was, per Rockstar’s own site and corroborated by outlets that watched it, 26 minutes of footage captured in-engine on PlayStation 5 — so the “no gameplay shown” framing this page carried since August no longer holds and has been removed. Nothing else on this page was re-verified on this pass.
