Key takeaways
  • As of 18:10 UTC on October 28, 2026, Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft had published no official GTA 6 download size, install size or storage requirement, and none appeared on Rockstar’s GTA VI page, the PlayStation Store or the Xbox Store.
  • ⚠️ The 210 GB figure has one source: PlayStation Game Size, an X account that reads PlayStation Store data, posted it at 17:11 UTC on October 27, 2026 as the PS5 Standard Edition download size. At our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, Rockstar and Sony had not confirmed it.
  • ⚠️ No official or credible Xbox Series X|S size had been reported by our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, 2026. A roughly 345 MB package in Microsoft’s store data is a pre-release placeholder, not the game.
  • ⚠️ The 210 GB is a download size, not an install size. No Ultimate Edition or day-one patch size had been reported at our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, so treat it as a rough guide and leave extra room.
  • Digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 12, 2026, and GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two says boxed copies contain a download code, and reports say there is no disc.
  • PS5 games can’t be played from USB storage, only from the built-in SSD or a compatible M.2 SSD. GTA VI is listed as Optimized for Xbox Series X|S, and Microsoft says such games must be on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play.

There is no official GTA 6 file size yet: as of 2:10 p.m. ET (18:10 UTC) on October 28, 2026, Rockstar, Sony and Microsoft had published no download size, install size or storage requirement for Grand Theft Auto VI on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. The one number going around, 210 GB, is a PS5 Standard Edition download size posted on October 27 by an account that tracks PlayStation Store data, and it had not been confirmed at that check. No official or credible Xbox figure had been reported either. Here is what the 210 GB does and doesn’t cover, when pre-loading opens, and how to make room using Sony’s and Microsoft’s own storage rules.

Has Rockstar confirmed GTA 6’s file size?

No: as of 18:10 UTC on October 28, 2026, Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony and Microsoft had not published a download size, install size or storage requirement for GTA 6. Rockstar’s GTA VI page lists the November 19, 2026 release date, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and pre-order links, but nothing about storage. The US PlayStation Store listing and PlayStation’s own GTA VI page show prices, editions and a 7-Day Pre-load, but no size. The US Xbox Store page shows the release date and an Optimized for Xbox Series X|S badge, and no size either. Take-Two’s June 24 pre-order announcement set out dates, prices and pre-loading, not storage.

If you have seen the 210 GB figure described as official, it isn’t: nothing Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft had published by our 18:10 UTC check confirms it. For everything Rockstar has put in writing about the game, see our GTA 6 confirmed details and release date roundup .

Where does the 210 GB figure come from?

It comes from PlayStation Game Size, an independent X account that reads PlayStation Store data, which posted at 17:11 UTC (1:11 p.m. ET) on October 27, 2026 that GTA VI’s Standard Edition is a 210 GB download. The same post listed the $79.99 price, a November 12 pre-load, the November 19 release and a midnight release time. The account regularly posts PlayStation Store download sizes before games come out, but it is not a Sony account, and by our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, 2026 we had found no comment on the number from Sony or Rockstar.

Dozens of outlets repeated the figure within hours. The coverage we read traces it back to that one post, which makes it one source repeated many times rather than independent confirmation. One site wrote that it could corroborate the number, but its story went up six minutes after the post and didn’t say how, so we don’t count it as a second source.

What the 210 GB covers, and what it doesn’t:

  • PS5 only. The post says nothing about Xbox Series X|S.
  • Standard Edition only. No size had been reported for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition at our check.
  • Download size, not install size. The space a game takes up once installed can differ from what you download.
  • Nothing on a day-one patch. The post doesn’t say whether a launch update is included or will come on top.
  • No build version. The post doesn’t say which version of the game the figure describes.

How big is GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S?

No size has been published: as of 18:10 UTC on October 28, 2026, there was no official or credible Xbox Series X|S figure. The Xbox Store page shows none. Microsoft’s store data does hold a package of about 345 MB (344,731,648 bytes, or 328.76 MB in the binary units some apps use), but that is a pre-release placeholder, not the game. Some coverage has listed the 210 GB for Xbox as well, but the post it came from covered the PlayStation Store only, and estimates that the Xbox version will land close to the PS5 number are guesses. Until Microsoft’s store shows a real size, or the download starts on your console, treat any Xbox figure as unconfirmed.

How much free space should you clear for GTA 6?

There was no official number to plan around at our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, so treat 210 GB as a rough guide for PS5 rather than an exact amount, and leave room on top of it. Neither the install size nor any day-one patch size had been published, and there is no Xbox figure at all. The number that counts will be the one your own console shows when the download starts.

To check what you have free:

  • PS5: from the home screen, go to Settings > Storage.
  • Xbox Series X|S: press the Xbox button, then go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices.

The table lists each current model and the built-in SSD capacity Sony and Microsoft advertise for it on their US sites. Both companies say part of that space is reserved for system software, so you will see less free space than the number on the box even with nothing installed, and neither gives an exact usable figure on those pages.

ConsoleBuilt-in SSD

PS5 Digital Edition825 GB
PS5 Pro2 TB
Xbox Series X1 TB or 2 TB
Xbox Series S512 GB or 1 TB

Older consoles can differ, so check your own storage screen. If the extra space is part of why you’re weighing a PS5 Pro, our look at whether the PS5 Pro is worth it for GTA 6 covers the trade-offs.

When can you pre-load GTA 6, and when does it unlock?

Digital pre-orders can start pre-loading on November 12, 2026, a week before GTA 6 launches on November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The June 24 pre-order announcement from Rockstar and Take-Two gives both dates, and the PlayStation Store lists a 7-Day Pre-load for both the Standard and Ultimate Editions. Nothing from Rockstar or either store that we could read gives a start hour for the pre-load. Some guides say it opens at local midnight, pointing to a Rockstar Support page, but that page would not load for us, so treat the hour as unconfirmed.

For the launch itself, the US PlayStation Store and the US Xbox Store both list the release at 05:00 UTC on November 19, which is midnight Eastern. That is a single timestamp for the whole US store, and at our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, 2026 we had found no Rockstar statement on whether players in other US time zones unlock at the same moment or at their own local midnight.

Four more things to know before November 12:

  • Boxed copies come with a download code. The June 24 announcement says the physical version contains a download code inside the box and goes on sale November 12 to support pre-loading. Reports since then say there is no game disc, so boxed buyers will be downloading the game too.
  • PS5 pre-orders can download automatically. Sony advises turning on Stay Connected to the Internet, and you can check the auto-download setting by selecting the countdown timer on the game in your Game Library.
  • Sony’s refund rule mentions downloads. Sony’s pre-order help page says you can cancel a pre-order for a refund before the game is released. After release, it says you can cancel and request a refund within 14 days of making the pre-order as long as the game hasn’t begun downloading to your console.
  • Prices match the June announcement. At our 18:10 UTC check on October 28, 2026, the Standard Edition was $79.99 and the Ultimate Edition $99.99 on both US stores. Our GTA 6 pre-order guide covers what each edition includes.

Can you play GTA 6 from an external drive?

Not from a USB drive on either console: Sony says PS5 games can’t be played from USB extended storage, and Microsoft says Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games such as GTA VI must be on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play. On PS5, the other place a game can run from is an M.2 SSD in the console’s expansion slot. A USB drive on either console can still hold games you aren’t playing to free up space. PlayStation’s own GTA VI page also says the game uses the PS5’s SSD for near-instant load times.

On PS5, Sony’s requirements for an M.2 SSD are:

  • A PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD (M key). M.2 SATA drives aren’t supported.
  • 250 GB to 8 TB of capacity.
  • A sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, which Sony recommends.
  • Form factor 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 or 22110.
  • A cooling structure such as a heatsink, which Sony says is required.
  • The latest PS5 system software installed first. The drive has to be formatted the first time you use it, which erases it.

Sony says it can’t guarantee that every drive meeting those specs will work, and suggests moving a game back to internal storage if it has problems on an M.2 drive. USB extended storage is still useful for parking PS5 games you aren’t playing, which you copy back to play, and PS4 games run from it directly. Sony requires SuperSpeed USB 5Gbps or faster and 250 GB to 8 TB, plugged straight into the console rather than through a hub.

On Xbox Series X|S:

  • Storage Expansion Card. Microsoft says it performs identically to the internal SSD and plays Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games. It lists cards that add 512 GB, 1 TB or 2 TB, and says to take the console’s first update before plugging one in.
  • USB external drives. For games, Microsoft requires 128 GB or more over USB 3.0 or 3.1. You can store Optimized games there and move them back to the internal SSD or an expansion card to play, which saves downloading them again.

How do you make room on PS5 or Xbox before November 12?

Delete or move games you aren’t playing: Sony and Microsoft both say your purchases stay in your library and can be downloaded again.

On PS5:

  • Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, choose what to remove and select Delete.
  • If a game shows Customize next to its title, you can remove parts of it, such as add-ons you don’t use or sections you’ve finished, and keep playing the rest.
  • To keep a PS5 game without it using internal space, move it to USB extended storage or an M.2 SSD instead.

On Xbox Series X|S:

  • Go to My games & apps > See all > Manage > Free up space to see what the console suggests removing.
  • To move a game, highlight it, press the Menu button, choose Manage game and add-ons, select the game box, then choose Move or copy.
  • Microsoft says removing a game doesn’t remove your license or your game progress, which stay in the cloud.

How does GTA 6’s reported size compare with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2?

For comparison, Steam lists 105 GB of storage for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, 125 GB for Grand Theft Auto V Legacy and 150 GB for Red Dead Redemption 2 on PC. Those are PC requirements for different games, not console download sizes, so they show scale rather than a like-for-like comparison. The reported 210 GB for GTA 6 on PS5 would be larger than all three, but it had not been confirmed at our 18:10 UTC check.

Can you download GTA 6 early from a leak or a demo?

No: the only legitimate GTA 6 downloads come through the PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store, starting with pre-load on November 12, and fake builds and demos offered elsewhere have been reported as malware. As of 18:10 UTC on October 28, 2026, Rockstar had announced no demo and no PC version, so a GTA 6 download offered anywhere else is not the official game. A leaker claimed in October to have a “playable” build of more than 200 GB, according to Dexerto; the claim is unverified, and it would not be the retail game in any case. In August, security firm Malwarebytes reported fake GTA 6 demo sites impersonating Rockstar that delivered malware built to steal saved passwords, and Security Affairs reported on a fake 113 GB build that turned out to be mostly empty padding wrapped around a small malicious file.

How we verified this

Status is pinned to 18:10 UTC (2:10 p.m. ET) on October 28, 2026. In a final check that ended at that time, we re-read Rockstar’s GTA VI page, the US PlayStation Store listing and its page data, PlayStation’s own GTA VI page, and the US Xbox Store page and its page data. None showed a download size, install size or storage requirement. Take-Two’s June 24, 2026 pre-order release covers dates, prices and pre-loading but says nothing about storage. Rockstar’s Newswire did not load outside a browser, and Google News showed no Rockstar, Sony or Microsoft statement on size through our check.

The 210 GB figure is single-origin and unconfirmed. We re-read the PlayStation Game Size post through X’s embed data at about 18:01 UTC on October 28. It was posted at 17:11:12 UTC on October 27, 2026, has not been edited, and gives a 210 GB download size for the $79.99 Standard Edition, a November 12 pre-load, a November 19 release and a midnight release time. The account is an independent tracker of PlayStation Store data, not a Sony account. Every story we read that repeats the number traces it to this post. One site wrote that it could corroborate the figure, but its story went up six minutes after the post and gave no separate source or method, so we do not count it as confirmation. Nothing from Rockstar, Take-Two, Sony or Microsoft confirms the figure, so the page never calls it official.

There is no Xbox figure. The Xbox Store page shows no size. Microsoft’s catalog data for the game package lists only an XVC package of 344,731,648 bytes with an install size of zero, and xbox.com’s page data repeats 344,731,648 as a maximum install size. We treat that as a pre-release placeholder and do not report it as the game’s size. Some coverage has paired the 210 GB with Xbox, but the post names only the PlayStation Store’s Standard Edition, and we found no credible Xbox number.

Dates and times rest on Take-Two and the store data. Take-Two’s June 24 release gives the November 12 pre-load for digital pre-orders, the November 12 on-sale date for the physical version, which it says contains a download code inside the box, and the November 19 launch. The release does not itself say there is no disc; that rests on press reports since the announcement, including LevelUp’s June 24 report, and on a Rockstar Support page that guides cite but that we could not open. The PlayStation Store lists a 7-Day Pre-load for both editions. The US PlayStation Store and Xbox Store data both give 05:00 UTC on November 19 for release, which is midnight Eastern. The same Rockstar Support page is what guides cite for a local-midnight pre-load; because it would not load for us, the page gives no pre-load hour and does not say when players outside Eastern time unlock.

Storage rules come from Sony and Microsoft. The M.2 SSD specs, USB extended storage rules, storage steps and pre-order refund rule come from PlayStation Support pages, and console capacities from Sony’s PS5 and PS5 Pro pages, all read on October 28. Microsoft’s rule that Optimized for Xbox Series X|S games must be on the internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play comes from two Xbox Support articles, Manage storage on your Xbox console and Use the Storage Expansion Card for Xbox Series X|S, read through Xbox Support’s own content service on October 28. Series X and Series S capacities come from xbox.com, and GTA VI’s Optimized badge from its Xbox Store listing. Neither company publishes usable-capacity figures on these pages, so the page gives none.

Comparisons are Steam PC requirements. Steam’s store data lists 105 GB for Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced, 125 GB for Grand Theft Auto V Legacy and 150 GB for Red Dead Redemption 2, read on October 28. They are PC figures for different games, used only to show scale, not console sizes.

Leak and malware lines are attributed. The claim of a “playable” build of more than 200 GB is a leaker’s own, as reported by Dexerto on October 12, 2026, and is unverified. The malware warnings rest on Malwarebytes’ August 24, 2026 research on fake GTA 6 demo sites and Security Affairs’ August 24 report on a fake 113 GB build. The page links to no leaked material.

What the page leaves out. It gives no storage-product prices or brand recommendations, no estimate of the Xbox or Ultimate Edition size, and no betting, prediction or price-forecast content.
