Key takeaways
  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation releases on 8 April 2027 and is the third and final part of the Remake trilogy.
  • πŸ”‘ It launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC on the same day. Remake and Rebirth were both PlayStation exclusives first, so this is the first time the trilogy has arrived everywhere at once.
  • Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind are finally playable. Both were in the party in Rebirth and neither could be controlled.
  • The Highwind is a real airship you fly yourself, and you can parachute off it onto the map. Chocobos now fight with you rather than just carrying you.
  • πŸ”‘ If you have not played the trilogy, the $84.99 Trilogy Edition includes all three games β€” fifteen dollars more than the $69.99 standard edition of this one on its own.
  • Director Naoki Hamaguchi has said plainly that this is the conclusion, and that there is a reason for that. No further Final Fantasy VII projects are in the works.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation arrives on 8 April 2027, and for the first time in this trilogy you will not have to own a PlayStation to play it on day one.

It is the third and final part of the Remake project, it was announced at Summer Game Fest in June 2026, and this week it was playable in public for the first time.

πŸ”‘ The platform line is the news. Remake came out in 2020 as a PlayStation 4 exclusive and reached PC a year and a half later. Rebirth came out in 2024 as a PlayStation 5 exclusive and did the same. Revelation goes to all four platforms on the same day β€” which is the first time anyone finishing this trilogy has been able to do it on the machine they already own.

What is new in Revelation?

You fly the Highwind

The airship is not a fast-travel menu. It is a vehicle you control, it lets you approach the world map from above, and you can parachute off it onto the ground below. For a trilogy that has spent two games moving you between bounded regions, handing the player free flight is the structural change of the game.

FITS

FITS stands for Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear, and it is a job system wearing a costume. Characters equip special gear that changes how they look and grants skills drawn from the classic Final Fantasy classes β€” Warrior, Black Mage and so on. It is the trilogy’s answer to a complaint as old as the first game: that the materia system makes everyone interchangeable.

Chocobos fight now

Previously they carried you. In Revelation you can fight while mounted, with chocobo-specific abilities β€” Choco Flap and Choco Magic were both shown on the show floor.

Vincent and Cid are playable

This is the one long-time players have been waiting for. Both characters joined the party in Rebirth and neither could be controlled. Here:

  • Vincent Valentine β€” the former Shinra test subject, using firearms and his transformed state. His Gates of Hell limit break was shown at Tokyo Game Show, along with a Synergy ability with Cloud called Jenova Deathmourner.
  • Cid Highwind β€” the pilot, fighting with a spear, and the reason the airship has a name.

How much of the story does it cover?

It picks up exactly where Rebirth left off and runs to the end: from the party’s arrival at the Great Glacier through to the finale at the Northern Crater. Wutai and Rocket Town, both skipped or compressed earlier in the trilogy, are said to feature properly.

For anyone counting, that is the last third of the 1997 original stretched across a full-sized game β€” the same ratio the first two parts used.

What the director has said about Rebirth’s problems

Naoki Hamaguchi gave interviews at Tokyo Game Show, and the interesting thing is how directly he addresses what did not work last time.

On the open world: he acknowledges that Rebirth drew comments about having too much in it, and says the scale in Revelation is still large but that they have made it easier to play. That is a designer conceding that quantity was mistaken for generosity.

On the platinum trophy: Rebirth’s was notoriously punishing. Hamaguchi says the team “didn’t expect so many people to want the platinum trophy”, and that for Revelation they are aiming for twenty percent of players or more to actually get it.

πŸ”‘ That second number is unusually specific for a developer to say out loud, and it is a design target rather than a promise β€” but it tells you the completionist grind is being deliberately shortened rather than quietly left alone.

Which edition should you buy?

Six of them, and one is obviously better value than the rest.

EditionPriceIncludes
Standard$69.99The game
Trilogy$84.99All three games β€” Remake Intergrade, Rebirth, Revelation
Physical Deluxe$99.99Game, mini-soundtrack, artbook, SteelBook
Digital Premium$99.99Game, Story Expansion Pass, 24-hour early access
Digital Premium Plus$109.99The above plus digital artbook, soundtrack, in-game items
Collector’s$349.99Physical Deluxe, a Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth statue, Expansion Pass, a Magic: The Gathering promo card

πŸ”‘ Look at the second row again. The Trilogy Edition costs fifteen dollars more than the standard edition of this game alone and includes the two games before it. If you have not played Remake or Rebirth, buying the standard edition of Revelation is close to the worst available choice β€” you would be paying $69.99 for the ending of a story you have not started.

If you have played both already, the standard edition at $69.99 is the sane default, and the deluxe tiers are worth it only if you specifically want the Story Expansion Pass bundled rather than bought later.

Preorders are open for most platforms. Digital Switch 2 preorders were still to come when this was written.

What is in the Story Expansion Pass?

Two post-launch add-ons, in a 2027 to 2028 window: one centred on Sephiroth, one on Vincent and the Turks.

⚠️ They are side stories, not more ending. Hamaguchi has compared them to Episode INTERmission, the Yuffie chapter added to Remake β€” backstory that fills in a character rather than extending the main narrative. If you are buying a premium edition expecting the story to continue past the credits, that is not what has been described.

Is this really the end?

Yes, according to the man directing it.

Hamaguchi has said that Revelation is the conclusion of the series and that there is a reason for it, and that no further Final Fantasy VII projects are planned at this time.

⚠️ Read the hedge as well as the statement. “At this time” is doing work, and Final Fantasy VII has generated spin-offs for nearly thirty years β€” Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus, Advent Children, Ever Crisis. What he is ruling out is another instalment of this story, not the franchise.

The bottom line

A 2027 date, every platform at once, an airship you actually fly, and two characters the trilogy has been holding back for six years.

The most useful thing on this page is the cheapest: if you are coming to this cold, the Trilogy Edition at $84.99 is the only edition that makes sense, and it costs fifteen dollars more than buying the finale on its own.

How we verified this

βœ… The release date, platforms and credits are consistent across the reference record and the coverage, and the platform point is the one worth checking. 8 April 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Windows via Steam, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store β€” all on the same day. That is a genuine change rather than a detail: Remake launched as a PlayStation 4 exclusive in 2020 and Rebirth as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2024, both reaching PC later.

βœ… The director’s comments come from an interview conducted at Tokyo Game Show and published two days before this page. Richard Eisenbeis spoke to Naoki Hamaguchi for Anime News Network on 19 September 2026. The statements used here β€” that Rebirth’s open world drew comments about having too much in it, that the platinum trophy proved far more popular than the team expected, and that Revelation is the conclusion of the series β€” are his, in that interview.

⚠️ The two demo builds described in coverage are not the same demo, and the page does not merge them. A hands-on event held on 31 August and 1 September was reported as being built on Chapter 4, with the Highwind and the open world. The demo on the Tokyo Game Show floor from 17 to 21 September is described as a Whirlwind Maze section featuring Vincent and Cid. Both accounts are reported; neither is presented as the whole demo.

⚠️ Edition prices are US dollars from a preorder round-up, not read off Square Enix’s own store. They are consistent with the trilogy’s history β€” Rebirth shipped at $69.99 standard, $99.99 deluxe and $349.99 collector’s β€” and the figures here match that structure exactly. Prices outside the US are not given, because they were not checked.

πŸ”΄ No resale prices appear on this page, and none will. The collector’s edition contains a statue and a promotional trading card, which is the combination that produces secondary-market pricing within hours of a sell-out. What something is being resold for is not a fact about the product.

⚠️ The announcement is placed at Summer Game Fest in June 2026 without a day attached. One account gives 5 June; the reference record says only June. The month is not in dispute and the day is not load-bearing, so the day is left out.

⚠️ The Story Expansion Pass content is described as announced, not as previewed. Two post-launch add-ons are listed, centred on Sephiroth and on Vincent and the Turks, in a 2027 to 2028 window. Hamaguchi has compared their function to Episode INTERmission β€” side stories rather than continuations β€” and that comparison is his framing, not a description of anything anyone has played.

βœ… The header image is a real aerial photograph of a snow-ringed crater and is not from the game. It was chosen because the story this instalment adapts runs from the Great Glacier to the Northern Crater, and because an overhead view is the perspective the game’s new airship is built around. No screenshot or artwork from the game appears on this page.
