Fantasy Television in August 2026: Premieres and Streaming Guide

The month’s largest fantasy story is a finish. House of the Dragon ends its third season on 9 August, and once it does, the big-budget live-action fantasy shelf is close to empty until November. What August offers instead is one significant new series, one entire season crammed into four weeks, and a great deal of anime.

What is the biggest fantasy TV event in August 2026?

The House of the Dragon Season 3 finale, on Sunday 9 August at 9pm ET on HBO and HBO Max.

Season 3 runs eight episodes and the seventh, “The Dragon in Winter”, aired on 2 August. The finale is the last of them, and it arrives with the season’s dragon count freshly rearranged — one rider bought by the other side, one dragon back from the dead, and a poisoning left deliberately unresolved.

In the UK, the finale streams on NOW and HBO Max from 2am on Monday 10 August, and Sky Atlantic broadcasts it at 9pm that evening.

Which fantasy shows premiere in August 2026?

Five, and only one of them is a major new live-action fantasy series. The dates below are US dates unless a UK one is given.

Lanterns is the one to plan around. It is HBO’s DC series built on the Green Lantern corner of that universe, it runs eight weekly episodes, and it is the only new prestige-budget genre drama starting anywhere this month.

The Librarians: The Next Chapter is the quiet oddity of the schedule. TNT is airing Season 2 two a week, Sundays and Mondays at 9pm, starting 2 August — ten of its twelve episodes land inside the month, with the last two on 6 and 7 September. Two episodes a week is an unusual rate for a US cable drama, and it means the season is nearly over before Lanterns is halfway through.

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place does something similar at the other end of the audience, and it is an ending rather than a start: Season 3 is a four-part series finale event, all four half-hours running back to back from 8pm ET on 4 August, with every episode on Disney+ the next day.

One Hundred Years of Solitude returns for its second season on Netflix on 5 August, and Netflix is splitting it: the first seven episodes arrive that day and a feature-length finale running close to two hours follows on 26 August, completing the adaptation of the García Márquez novel. It is the month’s only fantasy premiere that lands in every market on the same day.

What fantasy anime is airing in August 2026?

Most of the genre, frankly. If you count by hours broadcast, fantasy television in August is overwhelmingly Japanese.

Those dates are the Japanese broadcast dates. Crunchyroll carries this lineup internationally — Mushoku Tensei, Slime, Re:Zero and Saga of Tanya the Evil are all on its summer 2026 simulcast slate — so in the US and UK the episodes land the same day, usually within an hour or two of the Japanese broadcast.

Two more worth knowing about if you are already watching them: The World’s Strongest Rearguard, The Villager of Level 999 and a long tail of isekai are all mid-run, and the Chinese donghua side — Xian Ni, Wanmei Shijie, Fanren Xiu Xian Chuan — continues weekly on Tencent and Bilibili.

Which big fantasy shows are not coming in August?

Almost all of the ones you are probably waiting for — and this is the part worth knowing before you go looking.

And a group with no scheduled episodes at all as of 4 August: The Wheel of Time, The Sandman, The Witcher, Wednesday and Stranger Things have nothing dated on any broadcaster’s forward schedule. Nor does anything else set in Westeros, which is why the House of the Dragon finale is the end of that shelf and not a pause in it.

So: after 9 August, the calendar between House of the Dragon and Rings of Power is three months long, and Lanterns is the only new thing in it with a comparable budget.

Where can you stream fantasy TV in August 2026?

Five services carry essentially all of it, and the split is unusually clean this month.

• HBO Max — House of the Dragon to its finale on 9 August, then Lanterns from 16 August. Between them, the two shows cover every Sunday in the month in the US, and every Monday in the UK.
• Crunchyroll — the anime column above, simulcast the same day as Japan.
• Netflix — One Hundred Years of Solitude Season 2 from 5 August, worldwide.
• Disney+ and Disney Channel — Wizards Beyond Waverly Place Season 3 on the channel, and Locker Diaries: Descendants running to its Season 1 finale on 29 August on Disney+.
• TNT — The Librarians: The Next Chapter, twice a week, and not on a subscription streamer; you need the cable channel or a live-TV service that carries it.

That last line is the one that catches people out. The Librarians is the only show in this guide you cannot reach through a standard streaming subscription, so if it is the reason you were about to sign up for something, check that the service actually carries TNT before you pay.

In the UK, the fantasy-adjacent addition is Possession, a five-part supernatural thriller that arrives complete on NOW on 6 August rather than weekly.

What should you watch first in August 2026?

Finish House of the Dragon, then start Lanterns — in that order, because the calendar has arranged itself that way.

The finale lands on 9 August and Lanterns starts on the 16th, so the two do not overlap by a single Sunday. The finale and the premiere fall on consecutive Sundays, so one subscription covers the month’s two biggest genre events without either one waiting.

If you want something you can finish inside the month, Possession on NOW is the one — all five parts land on 6 August. The Librarians: The Next Chapter runs ten of its twelve episodes in August but does not finish until 7 September, and only in the US.
