⚠️ Spoilers from here. The rest of this guide covers the plot, episode by episode, and then the ending.
Episode recaps, episode by episode
Every beat below appears in at least two independent recaps, and most appear in three or more. Where the recaps disagree, we say so instead of picking one version.
Episode 1: First Period
The show opens on a 911 call over the wreckage of prom night, and the death toll from that night is about 200. From there it goes back to before the prom.
Carrie has grown up isolated. Stones fell on the house when she was a child, and Margaret has kept her away from the outside world ever since. Then her father, Ralph White, dies in a construction-site accident when concrete blocks fall on him. Without his income, Margaret has to find work, and Carrie starts at the local high school.
At school, Carrie falls in with Sue Snell and Chris Hargensen. Both have been accepted to Duke, though Chris cannot afford to go. A lockdown drill sends Carrie into a panic in which a TV stand falls, and Margaret storms into the school to confront Principal Grayle.
The episode turns on the locker room. After gym, Carrie gets her first period in front of her classmates. They throw tampons and pads at her, Chris films it on her phone, and Sue stands by without helping. Carrie’s panic knocks out the lights, and the episode cuts to a girl elsewhere who seems to sense it.
Episode 2: Foreign Language
Principal Grayle and Rita Desjardin meet with Carrie, and Rita explains what a period is. Chris shows the shower video around and uploads it to a private account, and Sue coins the nickname “Carrie Red.”
At home, Margaret finds the pamphlets Rita gave Carrie and sends her to the prayer closet, where Carrie sees her dead father. Back at school, the guidance counselor, Mr. Morton, takes Carrie to the library, and she meets Emaline, another outcast. Recaps differ on whether they first meet in the library or a school bathroom. The episode ends with a fight between Carrie and Margaret, and Carrie uses her powers to slam her door shut and lock it.
Episode 3: Social Studies
The episode opens on a documentary segment about women who claimed telekinetic powers. Carrie befriends Emaline and starts reading about witchcraft.
Sue and Chris apologize to Carrie, and Chris invites her to a party. Carrie sneaks out to go, drinks and dances, and Billy Nolan is there dealing drugs. Tina Blake needles Chris, and Chris learns that her parents are divorcing. Tommy Ross and Carrie watch the stars, and he drives her home. Chris, drunk, makes the Carrie Red account public.
Episode 4: Dramatic Arts
The Carrie Red posts go viral and start targeting students and staff, and classmates blame Carrie. Principal Grayle says the account sits outside the school’s reach, so staff can only watch the halls. Carrie finds letters among her father’s ashes, and Margaret sends her to pray.
Chris’s car is repossessed. Carrie unknowingly eats edibles, and Chris takes her to the construction site where her father died. What happens at the site differs by recap: one describes a collapse, another has Carrie falling into a ditch.
The episode then reveals that Chris runs the Carrie Red account. Recaps differ on whether Sue or Tina lets it slip. Chris insists it was a joke, and Margaret vows to make the people who hurt Carrie pay.
Episode 5: Physical Education
Margaret accuses Chris of running the Carrie Red account and takes it public, livestreaming a parents’ meeting where she calls for Chris to be expelled. Sue pleads with Chris to delete the account. Recaps agree on less in this episode than in any other, so this one is the shortest.
Episode 6: Home Economics
A hidden camera turns up in the house, and Carrie confronts Margaret. Mr. Peist (Rahul Kohli) is accused over a matter involving Brooklyn and dies by suicide.
Sue gives the school a recording, and Chris faces discipline. Recaps differ on whether that means a suspension or an expulsion. Chris and her parents sit down for a mediation, and Chris starts to apologize. A protest turns into a melee, and Sue breaks up with Tommy. At home, Margaret goes after Carrie, and Carrie stops her with her powers and locks her in the prayer closet.
Episode 7: Romantic Literature
Mr. Morton resigns, and Chris’s father, John, is arrested. Margaret, looking for help understanding Carrie, meets Amanda, who tells her about telekinetics.
The school debates whether to hold the prom, and Tommy asks Carrie to go with him. Chris and Billy rig the vote, so Carrie and Tommy are named prom queen and king. Principal Grayle spots Amanda in the crowd.
At the dance, Chris drops pig’s blood on Carrie after a dare from Billy. Sue rushes to the school to try to stop it. The screen cuts to black as Carrie is doused.
Episode 8: AP Physics
The finale returns to the interviews, with Sue describing prom night to Adelaide (Kate Siegel). In the gym, phones shatter, the doors lock, and a fire starts. A light falls on Principal Grayle, and a falling catwalk kills Tommy. Emaline offers to “take the wheel,” and recaps differ on whether Carrie or Emaline is behind most of the killing. Amanda, who came armed to kill Carrie, is stopped, though recaps differ on who stops her. Chris and Billy flee in Billy’s car, which flips, killing both of them.
At home, Margaret attacks Carrie, and the house collapses on them both. Margaret survives by using powers of her own. Carrie leaves with Emaline. Later, Adelaide stops Margaret’s heart and stages the death to look natural.
The ending, explained
Carrie survives and leaves with Emaline, while Sue Snell and Tina Blake also survive. Those are the core answers, and the sections below cover the rest.
Who dies on prom night?
Tommy Ross dies in a collapse at the dance. Chris Hargensen and Billy Nolan die when their car flips after they leave the school. A fire breaks out in the gym. Principal Grayle is hit by a falling light, but the outlets we checked disagree on whether he dies, so this guide does not say.
What happens to Margaret?
Margaret attacks Carrie at home, and the house collapses on them both. The finale’s twist is that Margaret has telekinetic powers of her own, and she uses them to keep the rubble off herself. In her interview she says she can no longer reach those powers, and Adelaide then stops her heart. The death is staged to look natural. Outlets give different causes for the staged death, so this guide does not name one.
What happens to Sue?
Sue survives. Adelaide makes her forget part of what she saw.
Who is Emaline?
Emaline West is an astral projector. During the prom she offers to “take the wheel” of Carrie’s powers. She is shot, and she later returns in person to rescue Carrie. Carrie leaves with her.
Who is on the interview team?
The members of the interview team have psychic powers, and some recaps call the group the Others. The interviewer is Adelaide, played by Kate Siegel. The finale leaves open what the team wants, why it opposes Emaline, and what Emaline wants from Carrie. Several recaps say the answers are still not clear by the end.
How does the show change the novel?
The series departs from Stephen King’s book in several places. According to Looper, the changes include the interview framing, Carrie’s survival at the prom, Margaret’s own powers and the new character Emaline. Slashfilm and Nerdist also cover the changes.
